I’ve got this downloaded and ready to go. This will be my first group read, and I’m exited to join in.

Hunter (goathunter) | 75 comments Hello, all. The other Hunter here, subbing for Robert McCammon. He does his best to avoid social media and leaves all of that up to me.

Ken invited me to participate in McCammon's stead. If there are any questions related to "Haunted World" that I can't answer, I should be able to find out.

Enjoy!

I can totally relate to avoiding social media. Goodreads is all I do and watch YouTube vids. I get on Facebook every few years and don’t do Instagram, Twitter or whatever else there is!

Thank you for standing for him 😊

I'm sure it was unintentional, but I can't believe you left William Miekle off the list! He's one of my all time favorites and was the first to chime in!

Welcome authors (especially Mr. Miekle)! So many awesome writers in a single collection will be great!

Thank you so much for bringing that to my attention. I went ahead and remedied that infraction. By the way, for those of you that are unaware, Willie just had surgery today to remove a tumor, one that he aptly named Boris the bastard, and is doing well. He assured me, before surgery, that he indeed wanted to participate in our conversations. I’m sure Willie would appreciate any warm wishes and thoughts. From all of us mods here on Horror Aficionados, get well soon, Willie!!

Question for all of the authors:

The ghost story is considered the oldest form of horror story. Have any of you had real life ghost experiences?

Not in the traditional sense. However, when I was researching my YA historical novel (1863: A House Divided), I spent four days in Gettysburg. At midnight, I ventured alone up Cemetery Hill and stopped in my tracks when I was struck by the most incredible wave of grief and regret; it was completely unexpected. It passed through me and moved on, as if it was a ghost that was determined to make me feel what he was feeling....to try to make me understand. Was it a ghost? I do wonder....

I have coordinated with the authors and we will be making up 5 Horror Book Boxes filled with signed copies of many of the contributing authors previous works along with some of their ebooks, as well as goodies from Silver Shamrock Publishing. Five luck winners will nab a box (over $200 value each).

Here’s how it will work:

1) You must read MIDNIGHT IN THE GRAVEYARD and participate in the discussion.

2) You must post an honest review on Goodreads and Amazon.

That’s it! Good luck to everyone and we look forward to a fun and frightful Halloween read together!

message 84: by Ronald (new)

Ronald Kelly | 162 comments I, too, had a near-ghost experience related to the Civil War, back when I was a younger man. It was in the summer of 1981; I was twenty-one that year. I had a voracious appetite for history involving the War Between the States ( I had family that had fought for both the Confederacy and the Union; two had been rebel spies... one publicly hanged and one had vanished at the bank of the Cumberland River, never to be found by his kin).

The ghostly day of my experience happened at Stones River Battlefield in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. I tended to keep to myself back then (my life mostly consisted of eating, sleeping, and writing), and I was making the marked stops along the driving route, going from one skirmish point to another. At Stop #7, a narrow pathway cut into a heavy woods of cedar and pine. I set off down the trail with no apprehension whatsoever (I had been to Stones River several times before and was familiar with the trails). About a half mile down the pathway, I felt an eerie sensation... as though I were being watched. The further I traveled, the more palatable the sensation became. Soon, I had the overwhelming feeling that something was moving in the woods to either side of me. The disturbing thing was that it seemed as though a massive presence was moving around me... almost as though I was surrounded by a large group of people. I saw nothing, heard nothing... but the sensation was strong to the point of being unsettling. It felt like I was in the center of an... well, to tell the truth... an army... and that those around me were marching through the underbrush.

I began to slow my pace, feeling more frightened than I ever had as a young'un. Looking back now, I wonder if it was my own fear and anxiety I felt... or a collection of emotions that were other than my own. Up ahead, there was a large boulder and a very sharp turn in the trail. I stopped. It was almost as though I sensed that there was something ominous around that corner... something I definitely didn't want to lay eyes on. At that moment, the sensation of motion around me stopped. A gentle breeze ruffled the leaves of the trees and birds sang overhead. Whatever I had experienced -- or imagined -- was gone.

Spooked, I turned around and headed back up the trail to my car. Sometimes I wonder what I might have encountered if I had gathered the nerve to take that lonesome bend in the trail...

Yep. I live in a town that's been around longer than the US has been a country, and for about nine years, my wife and I lived in a converted apartment building. Saw all sorts of weird shit happen there. Moving objects, an oven that turned itself on, a door which unlocked itself, chairs that rearranged themselves, faucets that would randomly turn on full blast...

Yeah. Never felt threatened by it. It was more of an annoyance than anything else, especially the oven incident. Imagine walking through your home having a semi-rational conversation with thin air about how leaving the oven on will potentially burn the place down.

ANYWAY, I could go on, but I've gotta run to a Ghost concert. I'll check in later! :-)

Woop Woop! In you FACE other GR give-aways that only let people in the U.S. enter, thereby making all non-U.S. citizens schlump in their reading nooks and mutter into their dog-eared pages about living at the other end of the globe and feeling left out of the school-yard games. HA ROCKS!

Just recently, when I swear one of my kids walked through the kitchen into the garage. I called out to them, nothing. Went into the garage, nothing. Everyone was still upstairs. It didn't spook me so much as leave me with a lingering feeling of something being only half-finished. Like a sentence cut off that I'll never hear the rest of.

Alan Clark (alanmclark) | 113 comments No, but not for lack of trying. Been to the Bell property—of Bell Witch fame—in the near-ghost town of Adams, TN. Living in Nashville for many years, about an hour southeast of Adams, we did that quite a few times in the fall, visiting the cave, locating the well on the property and the remains of the foundation of their home. We'd speak of all the creepy history of the Bell Witch to get thoroughly spooked on the way there and back. Always a fun autumn thing to do. Elizabeth Massie went with us once, ain't that right, Beth? I have a picture looking down the well, but I don't know how to post a picture here.

Loved the visit to Adams with you guys, Alan! While we didn't encounter the Bell Witch, it was spooky good fun. AND the visit gave me the inspiration for my Ameri-Scares novel, Tennessee: Winter Haunting. I wish I knew how to post a photo 'cause I'd love to see the one you're talking about. Yes, it is creepy. If it is indeed the original well on the property it would be at least 200 years old, built when that part of Tennessee was still a rather isolated, forested area. Now imagine being there in the fall of 1817, hearing the crackle of leaves and dry brush, smelling the beginnings of autumn decay as you perhaps walk along in the woods, your head full of the religion and superstitions of the time. What was that noise? Wildlife fussing about in the thickets doesn't sound like that. That floater in your eye becomes a ghostly form against the late sky at dusk. Something is following you! In a panic, you hurry home, tripping on yourself to get to to the safety of you hearth and home!

Oh, we Tennesseans know that. She has terrified our children and adults for almost 200 years.
