Esther Rabbit | 9 comments Hi there! I’m Esther, blogger and author of two PNR novels. I recently wrote an article about my book cover design experience & process with Damonza: https://estherrabbit.com/my-book-cove...

I was wondering how many of you have worked with book cover designers or platforms like 99designs and how was the overall experience? If you have any designer recommendations for me, that would be greatly appreciated :)
Thank you & have a lovely rest of the day.

Matthew Lightfoot | 6 comments I used Fiverr. The freelancer I used was based in Vietnam and though there was a little language difficulty, we worked ok together. I had a clear idea of what I wanted, and mocked up a cover using rudimentary photoshop skills to show what I wanted. We then went through a number of iterations...make this smaller, that bigger, change font colour etc etc. I think in the end he was probably getting sick of me and thinking I was an over demanding customer but I was really pleased with the end result. It cost me about $25 and was money well spent. The cover of my book has drawn a lot of attention and has become quite a talking point. I'd definitely use the same guy again.

Kevin (kevingchapman) | 21 comments I have had great experiences with Bespoke Book Covers in the UK. The time difference is occasionally an issue for me in the U.S., but overall very good service and value

Barbara asked: Are they very expensive, and were you happy with their work

Matthew, the The Two Week Traveller looks like a fab cover! And ties in so well with your surname too :)))))

Charles Sterling | 21 comments I was lucky to get into photoshop from a young age and design them myself, but I'd recommend Fiverr because some really effective book covers go as cheap as 5$! That means you could even get a few different people and pick the one you like best.

That's crazy! Will look into that asap. Thanks, Charles

Matthew Lightfoot | 6 comments I’d agree with Charles. Fiverr is an excellent source of freelancers who often charge very reasonable rates- especially those located in Asia. My tips would be -
1. Pay a little more to find someone who offers unlimited revisions.
2. Have a basic outline of what you want the cover to look like. Mock it up on PowerPoint or even scribble on a piece of paper then photo it and upload.
3. Don’t be afraid to ask for changes, no matter how small, until it’s perfect.

I had the idea for my cover but it took about 8 revisions to get it exactly right. I’m sure the guy was sick of me in the end but as long as you communicate in the right way- be polite and patient and allow for slight language issues, then there’s no reason you’ll have problems.

That's excellent advice.

Alistair Dunlop (erragael) | 3 comments My son is a graphic designer and technical illustrator. I gave him an idea for the cover of my latest novel, When Only Memories Remain. I suggested a rather dark, stormy sky with a glimpse of sunlight. He came up with white flowers and lots of blue and green. Great cover. Glad he did not use my brief.

Ron Crichton (rpjc) | 3 comments If you wish to try your own hand at design you might consider GIMP. Photoshop is used by professionals in design and comes at a cost. On the other hand GIMP is open source software and freely available to download and install.

Becoming proficient with this kind of software may be a steep learning curve if you are unfamiliar with this type of software, but there are online tutorials all over the web. Some are better than others, but they will teach you enough to get started, or in my case, enable you to create a cover of high quality suitable for publication.

Learning to use it may be a good holiday time project.

Ed Protzel (ed_protzel) | 62 comments My experience has been great, especially on my latest book. The publisher wanted my input - which I gave, from concepts and mood to stock images. I also noted what I did not want, tired/overdone/stereotypes used so often on similar genres. Then the designer did her magic!

Susan Kite | 58 comments My publisher is amazing with covers. I think the last one was her best. And yes, we have gone back and forth on one of my covers, but she nailed this one! Moon Crusher

Chrishelle Monet (chrishellemonet) | 1 comments Hi,

I designed the book cover for my novel I just released, "The Art of Being Ignored: Diaries of a Corporate Creative."

The creative process was so much fun. :)

P.J. Braley (pjbraley) | 6 comments Two years ago, I designed a book cover for The Fire Slayers, but having been signed by Between The Lines Publishing, their book designers wanted to change the focus to the main character. It was quite interesting to see how other people interpreted the narrative. I had copyrighted the Man on Fire symbol for use in the book, but never thought it would become the center of the cover. The artwork is so much better than my original design and actually suits the title better. All in all, I just love it. Check it out at TheFireSlayers.com

Dion Anja (dionanja) | 9 comments I bought 10 templates from a designer during this Black Friday sale. Knowing a little Photoshop myself, I have been playing with some of them & they really fit into my aesthetic and so far results satisfied me! I think I will use one for my upcoming Gothic novel!
