Discuss Chapter 8 - Chapter 13

NOTE: While this section is meant to focus on the specified chapters of this book, this read is meant for people who have already read the entire series.

As a result, unlike most of our group reads, full spoilers for the series will be allowed without spoiler tags in every discussion post.

If you haven't read some/all of the books (What's wrong with you?) proceed at your own peril.

Dara (cmdrdara) Ch. 8
-Bill and Fleur's wedding is lovely.

-''Bonded for life'' sounds a LOT more permanent than ''husband and wife''.

-Voldy's having wand problems and searching out Gregorovich, who made Krum's wand. Talk about a throw-away tidbit from GoF.

-What's with Krum and liking really young girls? First Hermione who was 14/15 when he was 18 and now Ginny who's 15/16 while he is 21. Perv.

-Maybe it's because I'm watching so much Gilmore Girls but Auntie Muriel reminds me of Richard's mother Trix. I don't thin anybody here will get that reference.

-The Dumbledores have some drama. I agree with Harry – sort of betrayed that Dumbledore never mentioned that he grew up in Godric's Hollow.

-Kingsley's patronus and message always gives me the chills.

Ch. 9
-Being catcalled is never fun. I feel you, Hermione.

-Voldemort's name has been Tabooed. Any time anyone says it, their location is revealed and any protective enchantments are broken. Hermione says it and the Death Eaters find them.

-Hermione using her Dragonborn skills, using Aura Whisper. (http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Au...)

-Poor Draco, being used by Voldemort to torture people. Sad fate.

Ch. 10
-It seems really irresponsible for Dumbledore to keep so much from Harry, especially key information like how to destroy horcruxes. ''The fate of the wizarding world hangs in the balance. I'm gonna leave things vague and hope 3 barely legal teenagers figure it out.''

-Can you imagine a poster of Farrah Fawcett in Sirius's room? I don't know if she was as big in the UK in the 70s was she was in the States but it's still amusing.

-Lily puts some info in her letter that she shouldn't, like the face that James has an Invisibility Cloak.

-I forgot that Voldemort brought Kreacher to test out his defenses of the locket.

-What a surprise! Hermione was right again. This time about the treatment of house elves.

Ch. 11
-I'm with Harry – Lupin should not ditch Tonks and his kid. It's irresponsible. I also get the feeling that Lupin works so hard to keep his composure and be mild-mannered because of people's expectations of werewolves. We finally see that mask crack. It's not pretty.

-Why would Harry believe anything Skeeter wrote? He has first hand experience with the lies she tells.

-Sigh. The return of Umbridge.

Ch. 12
-''But according to you,'' said Ron, ''Voldemort's got Ollivander locked up somewhere.''This is the first time I noticed that Ron said ''Voldemort'' instead of ''You-Know-Who''. I could have missed it elsewhere though.

-Bold plan, going into the Ministry. Guess there's no other way. They don't know where Umbridge lives.

-Stun all of them. Disillusion the bodies.

-That statue is horrific. I get a whole Nazi feel with the rounding up Muggle-borns and their ''rightful'' place in society. I wonder if Jo was trying to evoke that on purpose.

Ch. 13
-The photo Harry sees in the Skeeter book in Umbridge's office is Dumbledore and Grindewald.

-Umbridge is so nasty, so sadistic and evil. And so easy to hate.

-It's kind of amusing that Hermione is good at everything but the Patronus Charm.

Crap. I posted a bunch of comments for this section in the last section. Moving them here.

Mr. Weasely's patronus is a weasel? That's a bit on the nose isn't it?

Lupin trying to ditch his wife and kid. Boo!

I have a hard time believing that one act of kindness to Kreacher would change him so dramatically, even something as big as giving him Regulas's locket, but oh well.

So they have a really horrible plan to get the locket from the ministry and are lucky not to be caught. Didn't we learn in Goblet of Fire that Polyjuice only lasts an hour? Seems like the events in the ministry stretched that 1 hour pretty well to me.

And now on to the slow part of the book...

Dara (cmdrdara) The Polyjuice Potion bit is pretty annoying. Crouch Jr had to drink it on the hour, every hour in GoF but somehow the Trio's dose lasts that long? And again when Harry and Hermione go to Godric's Hollow. One dose is sufficient?

terpkristin Everything about the scenes in the Ministry with Umbridge's use of MadEye's Eye and the enforced labor making those pamphlets and the horrificness (yes I made that word up) of the trials. Very uncomfortable to read. But again, probably very instrumental in teaching these tough topics to the target demographic.

Suzanne | 1582 comments I liked the books way more than the movies, but one thing I thought the movie did well was Hermione's scene deleting herself from her parents' lives. It was very touching in the movie, and kind of an aside in the book.

I do like how Harry and Ron are running around before the wedding saying "We need to plan." Meanwhile, Hermione is quietly creating and packing. Can you tell who my favorite character is?

Suzanne | 1582 comments Dara - good point about the polyjuice - I wondered about that too.

With all this wow I'm playing, I decided to throw on old movies in the background(last night was The Matrix). I think over Thanksgiving I'm doing LotR (the extended versions), and then I just might follow that up with the Harry Potter movies.

I don't like them nearly as much as the books, but they are still a lot of fun.

Suzanne | 1582 comments That is a great idea.

I think the movies did a great job with the looks of the characters. Everyone described in the books looks an awful lot like what I remember the movie characters appearance.

I think I've only seen each of the movies once, so might be fun to re-watch.

I had to stop the Matrix during a dungeon because it was too distracting. But for normal stuff it's fine. There are a bunch of movies I want to rewatch including the HP ones, so this seemed like a good way to do that.
