Amanda (stoneknivesandbearskins) | 86 comments Read this in the early 2010s. I unfortunately don't remember much about the cover, I think it may have been a black and white photo. It was very short and the writing was highly stylized. It shifted in POV between several characters and was written in the 1st person, sometimes without capitalization or punctuation. Each "chapter" would last only a page or two.

One of the characters was a little girl from a Jewish family, and her chapters were supposed to read like they were written by a six year old, with very simple language and a poor grasp of grammar. Toward the beginning of the book her father was sitting in their house with her in his lap when he was suddenly shot (non-fatally, I believe, though he may actually have died) by another character, a racist young man who had gotten involved in the KKK. He shot him either through a door or a window before running away. It caused a huge stir in their small town, and I think the police were looking for the culprit but no one knew who did it (except the little girl).

There was another character who was a local woman who liked gossip, and I think there was a little bit about the young man's family having problems (abusive father?). I don't remember much about the plot except the guy getting shot, and the main thing that stood out to me about the book was the unusual style in which it was written.

Amanda (stoneknivesandbearskins) | 86 comments I just remembered I read the book when I was in the 8th grade (checked it out from school library, so it probably would have been considered young adult) around 2012-2013. The cover I think was an olive green/yellow. with a photograph in the middle of it.
