Novel about a young man who communicates with one or more of the HPLovecraft beings (Cthulhu maybe?? Yog-Sothoth?) by phone. The young man works in a corporate office and talks with a young woman (a slightly newer employee than he is) about the time-use log they are required to fill out and that they are not allowed to count the time they spend filling out the log. She is shocked by this, he is a little more used to it. The HPL being(s) appear in this story more as friendly, older beings who listen to the young man and maybe the young woman too, and are sympathetic to the humans. They are not the horrifying, drive-you-insane-if-you-deal-with-them monsters HPL cast them as. Read this 30 or so years ago.

The two scenes I remembered are not exactly the way I remembered them and not in the same place in the book either...appropriately for a Lovecraft-influenced story. :)
