I read this book probably 10-15 years ago. It's about a small town told from the point of view of a girl who, I recall, was somewhat popular. A new boy shows up and becomes her friend. He's really artsy and doesn't quite fit in. One scene is of them talking to each other and he points out that she finished a whole ice cream sundae by herself while they're talking; she doesn't eat much. The local boys don't like him and the book ends in tragedy because of this.

What are the girl's interests/skills/hobbies?
What's the location (country/region)? Why did the boy's family move to this small town?
They're highschool age. There isn't a romance, it's more of just a friendship. I don't recall the girl's interests or the location, just that the town is conservative and the new boy is very artsy, so the rest of the folks don't really "get" him. In the final scenes, he dresses as an angel with his face made up.

So the boy is very artsy and the town he moves to is very small-town. The girl is popular but had an eating disorder. In the end, the new boy dresses as an angel and when the popular boys see him dressed like this, they throw him in the lake/river during winter and the new boy is never seen again--that's what I can recall.
