As the explanatory article points out, the man getting a shoeshine had to be still for at least seven minutes in order for the photo to be taken by Louis Daguerre. The man giving the shoeshine obviously was moving, but in the same general place, hence he appears in the photo, but his image is blurry. The article says at the time of day the photo was taken, the street was crowded with people - but there were all moving, quickly through the place, hence did not appear in the photo at all. I just love this photo - talk about time travel! This is also a great example of Andre Bazin’s observation that a photograph rescues an image from “its proper corruption in time”.
