Might be worth doing a live chat with a representative.

Just a thought but do you have a payment method linked to the account? I'm assuming you do but the only stupid question is the one you don't ask!

Also here https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custom...
the top sentence states you don't need an amazon device to buy books for others so I'm stumped.

Unfortunately that is the USA site. The Amazon.ca site does not have that option.

Thanks for all the trouble you've gone through, Louise. I do appreciate it very much. I have a feeling though that Amazon is off the table for me. :(

Can you get an Amazon.com address? I feel like a lot of Canadians have one.

I did have one but it was transferred to the Canadian site once that was up and running. I'll have to see about trying to open another on the .com site.

The link is clear to what you want, but it might make it hard for people to know what has already been bought for you. On Elfster people shopping can mark things as bought so you don't get the same book twice. So it is up to you :)

iam (iamreads) | 72 comments Isaiah wrote: "On Elfster people shopping can mark things as bought so you don't get the same book twice. So it is up to you :)"

Where can you mark things as bought? When I check out other people's wish lists i can only click on the books which leads to the amazon page...
Also how does it work if we don't buy the book via amazon, or via a different amazon domain site?

Heather K (dentist in my spare time) (dentistinmysparetime) | 2075 comments Mod
You have to be “following” a person’s wishlist to be able to mark things as purchased. I just basically follow everyone! The person won’t know how is following them.

Heather K (dentist in my spare time) (dentistinmysparetime) | 2075 comments Mod
You mark as purchased regardless of where you bought from. Once you follow someone, you’ll see that option pop up on their wishlist.

iam (iamreads) | 72 comments Makes sense, thanks!

Heather K (dentist in my spare time) (dentistinmysparetime) | 2075 comments Mod
When you sign into Elfster, go to "Wish lists" on the top. I then press "Add to Wish list" and type in the names of books that I want. If typing in the name doesn't give you the results you want, I then go to "+ More options" next to the search box and just paste links.

Also, I go to "settings" under the wish list tab, and I type in information about myself and what I want. I also put in a link to my Goodreads page. Also, it's important to set the list to "public" so everyone can see it.

You can't give preorders from Amazon.

Felicite Reads (felicite_reads) I am just realizing this seems to be more for ebooks than physical books. Is there a way to specify that I'm asking for physical books on my account? I'm also worried I won't know how to gift ebooks because I'm don't use this format--if this happens is there someone who could help or maybe an online resource I could use?

You can post on your elfster page that you want physical books but that means putting your address on there. If you don't know how to give ebooks you could purchase online gift cards.

Hi Rick! You join via Elfster (I've posted the link a few places) and make a wishlist there (there is a tab on top to make a wishlist). On the 16th, I will be randomly assigning you a match. The person who is assigned to you and the person you are gifting to are NOT the same. You then send your match gifts from their wishlist with the pseudonym "Secret Santa" or whatever you want to call yourself over the next few weeks. Does that help?

Gifting ebooks is very simple through Amazon. If you have an international match, I gift through Smashwords. If you go to a product page on Amazon and you are on their ebook format, there is an option to "give as a gift." Just make sure you write "Secret Santa" instead of your own name!

Here is wishlist making information from Elfster:

What’s the most FUN part of using Elfster?

I think it’s the WISH LISTS!
What better way to drop ‘not so subtle’ hints for that very item you’ve been pining over!?
But my favorite part is actually being able to view the Wish Lists of those on my shopping list!
Talk about a time saver!

So how do you make these ‘Little Lists of Magic’, you ask? Follow these steps!
First, click on WISH LISTS at the top of any Elfster page to go to your Wish Lists page.

By default, you have 1 premade wish list in your account. If you’d like to make another (you can have multiple wish lists with different view settings on each) here is how:

To create a NEW ADDITIONAL Wish List:
- Click on the +NEW WISH LIST button toward the top right corner of the page.

- You may name your Wish List anything you would like, type the name under "Wish List Name:"

- Next, choose who can see your Wish List by selecting your choices under the "Who can see this Wish List?" area.

Choices are:

• PUBLC: Anyone with a registered Elfster account can see this Wish List.
• GROUPS: Click on GROUPS to get a drop down list of any active Gift Exchanges within your group/s. You can check or uncheck groups depending on your preferences.
• INDIVIDUAL: Only the person you choose can see this Wish List. To pick this person, select INDIVIDUAL and click on the drop down list of names.
You must be Elfster FRIENDS with a person in order for their name to appear in this list.
• PRIVATE: Only you can see this Wish List. This option is great for storing wishes you may want to add to another list later, or even making 'Idea Lists' filled with gift ideas you've had for giving to others!

- You may also add a note to your list, it will be listed at the top of the Wish List once you're completed. To do this, type your note under the OPTIONAL NOTE section. This section allows you to write up to 500 characters. This is a great place for restrictions, sizes or favorites to be listed!

Be sure to click the green SAVE button at the bottom of the screen when you are done to save your changes!

You can have as many Wish Lists as you'd like if you want to be creative!
You can even create separate Wish Lists to be only able to be viewed by certain exchanges too if you'd like!

I usually buy from .ca but do have a .com account. In order to purchase on the .com site I always have to call, usually every 2 purchases. I do have a US address I can use but Amazon wants a credit card, and all my cards have a Canadian address and it always re-directs me to .ca.

Ami (amie_07) | 332 comments Hi all, this is just a thought, as I participated a number of times already. I live in Indonesia, but I have Amazon US account. Of course it's easier if my giftee is from US.

But when they are not, and not all books they want may be available at other retailers including Smashwords that do international gifting (darn,I miss All Romance eBooks)

...what I usually do is

- Bought the ebooks
- Download the books (unlock the DRM 🙈)
- Send them via anonymous email and change the name to Secret Santa or something like that.

I find that an easier alternative route rather than change the domain of Amazon

I'd suggest caution with this as it skates the edge of book piracy and file sharing. I know that isn't the intention at all, and am not criticising your choice, but the law deals in facts not feelings.

With ebooks, smashwords and Amazon allow you to give it as a gift. DO NOT buy it for yourself and then try to gift as it becomes messy and problematic. If you have questions, feel free to message me as well!

Some people use Elfster for multiple exchanges so they have non-book items. I'm trying to make sure that people for this exchange have ebooks or at least books on their wishlists!

I understand, most of the times I will ask first for the giftee, who don't live in the US, whether they have account and books they want at Smashwords where I could do the gifting internationally. Ebook gifting a tricky thing because this group has international members. I've had one giftee one year where I end up sending hardback books, after the giftee said she was okay with it not being a digital book

Leslie | 80 comments My person seems to have tons of non book items that are well over the budget and most of the books that are on their list are over budget as well. A few are right at the amount. I feel kind of bad but I guess I’ll just be able to buy them one item? I thought it would be fun to buy a few little things over the month and wouldn’t mind if I went a little over. But I don’t think it will work in this case. I just feel like they might be sad getting only one thing but not sure what else to do. 🤷🏻‍♀️😢
