With the shorter shelves I look more carefully at book covers and titles, trying to pick something that looks interesting. With the longer shelves, I skim for stuff that I've read before and enjoyed. I think I may actually make better picks for the people with longer shelves. :P

i do compare books for pretty much everyone and try to pick books i've given 4/5 stars too; if none of those fit, then i look at books on my TBR and compare; failing that - I throw the proverbial dart and random select

oh, boy, it seems like everyone puts so much more thought into their choices for other people than i do. i started out doing 1 book i hadn't read but owned, 1 i had read and 1 i never heard of. then i started just looking at the dates of when the book was added to gr, and picking 1 of the books that had been languishing the longest, 1 in the middle and 1 of the latest additions. i'm thinking of either doing interesting titles or interesting covers next...or maybe i'll actually go by publication date, and do one of the oldest books, 1 in the middle and 1 of the newer ones. that could be interesting. any way i look at it, though, i'm pretty much an automaton when i'm picking books.

I usually compare books. But I think I'll be on the lookout for Holiday books since those are time-sensitive :)

In a perfect world, I'd like to recommend something I thought was a 4 or 5, too. But romance is such a freaking huge genre. I've been a devoted romance reader for 20ish years now, and I've spent the last 4 years or so reading m/m, branching out into other flavors of LGBT romance. I feel like I've got a pretty solid background in all kinds of romance. And I still get a significant number of lists every round where I haven't read any of the books, haven't read any of the authors represented, sometimes haven't even HEARD of any of these people. So I end up picking the ones with the prettiest covers or the most interesting sounding titles. I figure, everybody had to have put these books on their own list. Of course I want everyone to get a great book from my picks. But if they get a stinker, well, they picked it first! ;)

And on that note, pardon me while I give my list one more pass. I want to make sure I have all my holiday books on there!

We have a few newbies this round (Yay!). I'd like anyone who hasn't done this challenge before to double-check a few things to make this go really smoothly:

* make sure your profile isn't private. If it is, make it public OR friend everyone in your group. No-one can send you a PM whilst you have a private profile :)

* make sure your picking shelf is up to date (this of course, applies to everyone ;). You can keep changing it through the picking phase, but don't have books you've already read on there and don't want to read again. (Some members will have books with ratings on their shelves that they want considered because they want to do a reread.)

* create a second shelf to move the books that you select OFF your 'picking' shelf (notified in sign up). This will stop you getting multiple picks for books you have already selected (and saves asking members to do repicks for you).

* Have fun!!

I do that pretty much as well Becky :) But first I rearrange the list by highest rated title. If the list is more than 100 books, I only go to the next page where the books are still rated over 3.8 stars or so... I prefer to rec a book that I have rated or know the author etc which is why to go to the next page - but otherwise I start reading random (probably pretty covered or with funny titles;) precis' and see ones appeal to me.

What I love about this selection process is that everyone DOES do it differently - so I do get some books that have languished, or new to me, or pretty etc :)

And as you say, we have a massive database from which to read 'romance' :)

I might have to do that as I read mainly M/M and the people I got read mainly M/F and other than a few Vampire romance I just don't read M/f enough to know what is good. and Sometimes I choose a book just because the title hits me the right way.
