SOLVED. 1970s Confessional teen read about uncertainty of life set in Yugoslavia or Czechoslovakia [s]

I'm trying to remember the title/author of a book I read in about 1978--it was set in Yugoslavia or Czechoslovakia in the 1960s or 70s. The book is probably a translation. I was really too young to understand much about it at the time. The cover was a dark cover, I think with a girl on the cover. Confessional, first person narrator, but it wasn't about drugs, or sex. More about overall uncertainty of life--maybe she had dates, a sibling, etc.

I work in a book store and have for years and am very bookish--this isn't a Judy Blume, or anything very obvious. I've searched Google extensively with all the clues I remember about the books and it isn't anything published in the last 20 years. Pretty sure it was geared towards a teen audience.

Maybe Don't Cry For Me by Klára Jarunková? It was originally published in 1963 as Jediná. It's what it's called a "coming-of-age" novel.
"A Czech girl relates the events of her troubled fifteenth year, during which she matures enough to recognize and accept the problems as well as the adult world."
