I got this idea, and it's sticking with me. I've asked a few folks, and they seem to like it. So, here's the pitch:

A challenge comprised of suggestions from you, the Dragons and Jetpacks members. Something like "Read A Classic" would work, "Read Shakespeare" would be too specific. Think about challenges you've read/been part of, and suggest a category. Since I don't know what response will be like, I'm going to limit it to one suggestion each to start. Depending on how many suggestions I get, I'll pick a certain number to make up the challenge.

So, put on your thinking caps and start tossing ideas.

I'll check on things as they go.

C.E.C. (milanesa) | 32 comments Oooh I like this. How about "A book/graphic novel with neither people nor animals on the cover"?

message 3: by Melanie (new)

Melanie | 1689 comments -Time Traveler - 1 book from each decade/ century going back to ....

-read the same book in two different formats (ex. A Christmas Carol novel vs play)

-read a specific genre/ subgere/ microgenre

-read a YA or MG book

message 4: by Matthew (new)

Matthew (fogjuice) | 191 comments Maybe a few wild card categories? Like book length: 100-300 pgs; 300-500 pgs; 500-800 pgs; 800+ pages.

A book you read as a child, which you do not have on your shelves

Vinca Russell (vinxlady) | 1561 comments How about a book first published in the year you were born?

Along a similar theme; a book where one of the characters has the same name as you.

Mike Curtis | 155 comments I like Melanie's idea of reading a book from a different decade. For example, read a sci-fi (or fantasy) book from the 50's, one from the 60's, one from the 70's, etc. Almost like reviewing a history of the genre.

Another idea, read a book from a famous author's favorite/top 10 list. for example, I came across a website that has asked certain authors for their top 10 lists here http://www.toptenbooks.net/all-author...

or if I wanted to use a goodreads list: https://www.goodreads.com/blog/show/1...

what about a book from the Dragons & Jetpacks Ultimate Booklist?

I would never find that book :,)

I'd struggle too, but it's an easy idea to expand, for example to something like reading a book where the main character's name starts with the same letter as yours or a character has the same first name *or* surname.

True! I wouldn't be opposed to that idea. Would be a wicked fantasy protagonist (or even antagonist, if you will) with a name like yours tho. Sounds almost steampunk :)

That is what we do all the time over in the group Evolution of Science Fiction.

We haven't done any challenges in that group yet, but we are thinking about it.

My suggestion: a catch-up challenge. Readers would choose to catch-up on books this group has already read but which they didn't read at that time. They could post new comments in the old discussions.

There's already a D&J Catch up challenge, Ed.

Well, there definitely seems to be interest.

Keep the suggestions coming, folks, and I'll throw something together to add to the Challenge list for next year.

message 19: by Vinca (last edited Oct 20, 2019 01:19AM) (new)

Vinca Russell (vinxlady) | 1561 comments I know I've already added one suggestion, so ignore if you've already got too many, but I've been thinking about this and what I enjoy from challenges, and it's tasks that encourage me to read things I might not normally pick up or try formats that normally wouldn't cross my radar. With that in mind, tasks like reading a graphic novel, a book written in verse or a book of letters are always ones I find interesting. I know verse can put a lot of people off but there are science fiction novels written in verse out there (e.g. Dark Star) so it doesn't have to mean reading a whole book of poems.

I like that idea Vinca, I had a similar thought the other day but around play scripts

Could there be a randomiser challenge. Something like everyone taking part names a book and then everyone gets randomly assigned one? That way everyone should branch out into something new. Not sure how it would work though with country divides...

Hm. Not sure how to work that. Maybe, if I do a bonus section, like the Pop Sugar Challenge, put that in there. It's an interesting idea. Let me think on that.

message 23: by Melanie (new)

Melanie | 1689 comments A different group I’m in does a Pick-It-For-Me challenge. They team up in randomly assigned buddies. You tell them what shelf to look at and they pick a book for you to read that month.

message 24: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 1246 comments Oh Melanie, what a great idea! It reduces the to-read list rather than explaining it. Always a good thing.

message 25: by Sandy (new)

Sandy | 1665 comments You could take a favorite/famous saying and have people read a book for every word of that saying.

Example: "I am your father" read a book each with I, am, your, father in the title - 4 books in all. Something like that?

message 26: by Wayland, Ernest Scribbler (new)

Wayland Smith | 3545 comments Mod
Starting to draft up the Challenge now.

Still taking suggestions, I'm going for 50 slots, so I will be making some up myself as things stand now.

message 28: by Hayley (new)

Hayley | 550 comments Read a book that is or was once self published. There must be alot of decent self published books out there that can't be nominated for the book of the month :) (I've been looking at all the books in the SPFBO that I want to read!)

A book set in, or with the season in the title ( Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter)

Added a few, made up a few of my own. Not quite where I want to be numbers wise, but I'm getting close. I'll try and get this together to post up early next week.

Melanie | 1689 comments New, Brand New, New-ish
-read a book that's new to your (new author, new genre, new series)
-read a book that published in 2020
-re-read a book in a new format (graphic novel re-imagining, audio if originally read as a dead-tree-book etc.)

Haha, I love the phrase "dead-tree-book" 😂

message 33: by Freya, Dragon Rider (new)

A book with or based on a myth/folklore/faerie tale you are unfamiliar with

(For example, I'm familiar with Norse and Greek myths, so would try and pick something based on Indian/Russian/Inuit etc. instead)

Similarly you could try and read a book by an author from another country... though might depend if there's a translation available I guess?

Re-read a favourite!

I always feel a bit guilty going back to re-read anything as there’s so many new things. But nice to almost have permission to indulge!

Great idea Wayland.

- read a book with a country in the title

and yes Kirsty! Indulge in the re-read! There's a couple of books I've been wanting to read again for a while.

Ok, I've gotten to 50 slots for this, between y'all and a few other things. It's in the hands of my proofer. I'll post it for planning once she's done with it.
