It did remind me of one of the 1990s "New Adventures" novels with the forrest overgrowth - Blood Heat. Been ages since I've read it. Not sure if they actually took some ideas from that novel or not other than the overgrowth. IN recent years they have apparently borrowed some previous ideas from older novels that are "not canon" and making them canon for the show.
The rest was quite good. The kids were not as annoying as they have been before, Capaldi was brilliant as always and Clara was better, but still lying and a bad teacher.
While it was another 'the monster that isn't a monster' story, it looked great and was really atmospheric. Really nice looking episode.
Despite it's uneven handling of messages this was a nice little episode.
