Nik Krasno | 19865 comments When you have ambitions of pharaohs and wealth of Croesus, what do you do? Building Pyramids or Hanging Gardens sounds a bit anachronistic, so what else?
How about futuristic mega-cities? The US probably doesn't have enough weaponry to absorb the excess of cash of the oil rich Saudi Arabia, so they use the small change to develop the future. KAEC estimated at 100 billion USD https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle... and NEOM at only a modest - 500 billion https://www.businessinsider.com/saudi... . Yes, half a trillion with robot maids, flying cars (yet to be invented) and all the good old futurities. To make up for somewhat limiting Saudi laws and traditions, these are expected to have an autonomous and much lighter rules. As an aside - they might need also stronger air defenses.
Are we witnessing the creation of the Wonders of the new world or are they just a careless spending of monarchic absolute power? What do you think? And would you come to ribbon-cutting?

If this city is supposed to be the kingdom's post oil future, what is its economic core? One article made it out to be a port that supplies nearby areas by high speed rail, but those nearby areas are economically reliant on oil. I think this place is destined to become a $100 billion dollar ghost town, which highlights the truly amazing things that they could have done with the money.

On a side note, we already have flying cars. We call them helicopters. Consider normal traffic. Now replace all of the cars with helicopters. Does this seem like a good idea to you?

If it's mainly tourism, it'll hardly suffice. Effectiveness is of little concern for the sheikhs, be it regarding football clubs they pour unlimited money into or a Saudi army

Philip (phenweb) For main tourism in SA much more needs to change e.g. female rights, sunbathing, alcohol all of which Dubai accepts. Buildings are irrelevant.

For sightseeing again outside cities I cannot see my wife wearing a veil to visit the dessert or a shrine or anything else.

What do they think will attract people outside the Hajj. There are lots of warm and sunny places competing and lots of clever cities and nicer places to work without religious police waiting to lock you up.
