Paul West (firstcauseproject) | 29 comments Hi all, I'd like to undertake a serious bit of self-promotion here and announcethat I'm having a book signing/free wine tasting here in NYC a week from thursday! :) It'll be at Lenox Wines, on 10/8 beginning at 7pm, and it'd be cool if some of you fellow speculative authors wanted to show up. Check out www.firstcauseproject.com for more info over the next short bit...

Sorry I haven't been so active on the loop lately, hope everyone's well!
PW

S.M. Carrière (smcarriere) A huge congrats Paul! I'm about a 6 hour drive away (if we're really rushing), and unfortunately won't be able to make it! I do wish you the best of luck though and I hope it's a huge success!

By the by, is there any sort of traditional good luck saying authors have. In theatre it's "break a leg." What would it be for authors? Get a papercut?

message 103: by Anna (new)

Anna Walls (annalwalls) Maybe it "Break a spine" but that sounds really really bad, doesn't it.

message 104: by S.M. (new)

S.M. Carrière (smcarriere) Noooooooooooooooooo! Not the books! Anything but the books!

message 105: by Paul (new)

Paul West (firstcauseproject) | 29 comments Haha thanks guys :)

message 106: by Anna (new)

Anna Walls (annalwalls) You have a great time, Paul, and tell us all about it when it's over.

message 107: by Paul (new)

Paul West (firstcauseproject) | 29 comments I'm NERVOUS :)

message 108: by S.M. (new)

S.M. Carrière (smcarriere) You'll do great! We're all with you (at least in spirit).

message 109: by Paul (new)

Paul West (firstcauseproject) | 29 comments Thank you, Sonia :) I'll let you guys how it goes!

message 110: by Tod (new)

Tod Langley (todlangley) | 74 comments I have news - Prince Kristian's Honor was ranked 15th last week on Amazon's Hottest Fiction Titles.

This week, so far, I've been knocked down one by Alexandre Dumas. I never thought that would happen. It's got to be a glitch. I'm doing a screen capture and printing and framing it before it goes away!

It gave me a good little boost to get things going again. I'm now scheduling my first book signing for 31 October at a Barnes and Noble and a convention in Philadelphia in November.

message 111: by Anna (new)

Anna Walls (annalwalls) My book is on Amazon too. How do you find the rating? I know it's nowhere near 15th though.

message 112: by Paul (new)

Paul West (firstcauseproject) | 29 comments Nice, Tod, good luck!

message 113: by Tod (new)

Tod Langley (todlangley) | 74 comments Sorry, I should first clarify - this is Kindle sales only.

I never would have known had I not been on an ego trip and googled the book title and scrolled through a few pages.

www.kindleboard.com has a top 10 ranking system for fiction, non-fiction, children, etc. I saw on the google search my title in the same hyperlink as the Top 10 and thought, "Yeah Right!".

I clicked on the link and sure enough ... it was 15 last week and I got booted out of that spot to 16 by Alexandre Dumas.

The ranking system showed the current hourly sales at under 25,000 out of 350,000.

Anna - that's right under the product information. I think it's right under ISBN and publisher name. How you can get updates or info on an actual ranking ... I have no idea.

Regards, Tod

message 114: by Anna (new)

Anna Walls (annalwalls) This is really depressing. :) #3,271,752 That's where I rank. I just knew that it was worse than 15 by a truckload. Ah well. I learned where to look anyway.

message 115: by S.M. (new)

S.M. Carrière (smcarriere) Congrats Tod! That's awesome!

At least you rank, and have something in print, Anna. It'll all work out!

message 116: by Tod (new)

Tod Langley (todlangley) | 74 comments I haven't had the chance to read your book yet, Anna. But I liked the theme and concept.

I don't think my book is some great fiction novel - I wish it were, but it's just a good story.

I think the only reason it is doing well, is because of the constant social media networking I've done via Twitter and Facebook, as well as my interactive homepage, and reader reviews on Amazon.

Don't give up. I know you can do it. And writing more just helps make your skills better ... and for me it even makes me fell better about what I am doing! I am sure it's the same for most of us.

Good luck, Anna and keep at it!

message 117: by Anna (new)

Anna Walls (annalwalls) Yeah, I've just started all that. I even have the home page on Amazon but it's not all that interactive yet cause I've never bought anything from them yet. That'll happen soon too. Like you said, Sonia, at least I rank and that's cool all by itself. I admit, I don't think my book is any great fiction novel either, just a fairly descent story. Personally, I think my writing has improves a lot since I wrote that book but it was the first. Maybe I should have published one of my other books first that's water over the bridge and I don't hash over it much. As far as the marketing goes, I'm just a beginner and one must start somewhere. Thanks for the encouragement, both of you, it means a lot. Have no fear. I will keep pushing this snowball and someday, I'll be able to build a snowman.

message 118: by S.M. (new)

S.M. Carrière (smcarriere) That's the way!

I'm so proud of everyone here. A little odd, since I've never met you in person (one day... on a book tour perhaps?).

message 119: by Anna (new)

Anna Walls (annalwalls) One day for sure. When I'm rich and famous and everyone wants my autograph. ;)

message 120: by S.M. (new)

S.M. Carrière (smcarriere) lol! I already want it!

message 121: by Anna (new)

Anna Walls (annalwalls) Woohoo!!! It's coming up #3,278,160 - that's +6,408

message 122: by Anna (new)

Anna Walls (annalwalls) On a very different note http://operationdesertswap.webs.com/
is still looking for authors (or non authors) to help support our troops. There's still 58 soldiers that need a book and a Pen-pal.

message 123: by Garrett Cook (new)

Garrett Cook | 8 comments I've got two new books and I'm taking preorders on one upcoming one.
First, there's postmodern, risque fantasy/horror/Bizarro quest narrative and metafictional puzzle box,
Archelon Ranch, then a day later,
Murderland II Life During Wartimesequel to Murderland Part 1 h8 arrived. I'm taking preorders for the upcoming Jimmy Plush, Teddy Bear Detective at my blog: http://thegarrettcook.blogspot.com, which has more info on all these books.

message 124: by Anna (new)

Anna Walls (annalwalls) Congratulations!! 2 books and 1's a series. Write on and on. Obviously.

message 125: by Garrett Cook (new)

Garrett Cook | 8 comments Thanks! I'm excited to be continuing the Murderland series. I'm really proud of Murderland 2 and Archelon Ranch. They're darker, weirder, deeper and more exciting than the previous work I've done. And Jimmy Plush is a ton of fun to write.

message 126: by Anna (new)

Anna Walls (annalwalls) Speaking from experience, you improve the more you write.

message 127: by Garrett Cook (new)

Garrett Cook | 8 comments Certainly. For me, it's been about shedding inhibitions. I like to tell stories the way they want to be told.

message 128: by Anna (new)

Anna Walls (annalwalls) Good for you. Shedding inhibitions is a good way to put it. And I really like it that you say it's the story that talks. In my opinion, that's the best way.

message 129: by S.M. (new)

S.M. Carrière (smcarriere) I certainly think so! The story is always the best voice.

message 130: by Marc (new)

Marc (authorguy) | 97 comments I would like to let everyone know that my latest short story is now available from Echelon Shorts. I also posted a blog about it today, and I hope you'll check out the blog and hopefully the story as well.

http://echelonpressshorts.wordpress.com

I have a second blog up there from last month, too, but that's on the bottom of the pile.

message 131: by Tod (new)

Tod Langley (todlangley) | 74 comments I liked your posts Marc. I'll keep checking them out.

Thanks

message 132: by Tod (new)

Tod Langley (todlangley) | 74 comments OK...I'm on a shelf! They bought 10 copies of my book at Barnes and Nobles and put them on display for my upcoming (and first) signing on Halloween. They've sold half of them and have to re-order. The PR rep said if this continues they will consider keeping it on the shelf.

It was AWESOME ... I'm between Lackey and Le Guin.

You should have seen me (I'm always a Dork and in the store it was no different). I took photos of me next to my book at the display, by the shelf, with people walking by...it was hilarious!

Just found out I'm ranked 14th on Kindleboards for Hottest Fiction Titles (3 weeks in the top 15).

WooHoo!

message 133: by Garrett Cook (new)

Garrett Cook | 8 comments Congrats! It's an exciting experience. Just don't be nervous and remember to work it. Don't be shy. If they gave you the signing, you've earned the attention so claim it.

message 134: by Chaeya (new)

Chaeya | 44 comments Congratulations, Tod.

message 135: by Anna (new)

Anna Walls (annalwalls) That's such good news, Tod. Congrats.

message 136: by Marc (new)

Marc (authorguy) | 97 comments Tod wrote: "I liked your posts Marc. I'll keep checking them out.

Thank You, Tod. I'm just one of several authors on the Echelon Shorts board, though, so I don't know how often I'll be posting there. I have my own blog at http://marcvunkannon.blogspot.com, as well as my myspace blog and my twitter account, none of which link so I don't always have the same content everywhere! I hope you'll check out my website as well.

message 137: by S.M. (new)

S.M. Carrière (smcarriere) Hey Tod! That's so completely awesome! Congrats!

message 138: by Anna (new)

Anna (stregamari) hmmm, shameless self promotion, I can do that!

my first ever writing submission at

voting is at http://www.stellacameron.com/scarletb...

message 139: by S.M. (new)

S.M. Carrière (smcarriere) lol. I have such trouble with shameless self-promotion. I feel like such a prat asking people to "become my fan" or "read all about me on my blog." It feels odd!

message 140: by Marc (new)

Marc (authorguy) | 97 comments Don't talk about yourself, talk about your book. I don't like asking people to become a fan either, and in fact I never have, but my books are absolutely fabulous, all Echelon books are, and they deserve an audience. You the reader deserve a good book, one that's worth the read. It's a match made in Heaven.

That sort of thing.

message 141: by S.M. (new)

S.M. Carrière (smcarriere) Thanks Marc. It still feels odd. Perhaps it's because the book is so personal to me and my experience.... I'll try and look at it that way.

message 142: by Anna (new)

Anna Walls (annalwalls) Oh Marc, that's such a wonderful idea. I'm with Sonia. Never in my life have I been comfortable about talking about myself, not unless someone asks anyway, and my lifestyle get quite a few questions. I'll have to learn how to talk about my book and see how that works. See, I learned something new. Even old dogs can learn something new.

message 143: by S.M. (new)

S.M. Carrière (smcarriere) Pft! OLD, Anna? Seriously? LOL.

message 144: by Anna (new)

Anna Walls (annalwalls) You're too sweet but I've been around a couple bends in the river. ;)

message 145: by S.M. (new)

S.M. Carrière (smcarriere) lol. You're not old until you turn 100!

message 146: by Anna (new)

Anna Walls (annalwalls) Well that's cool. I'm a little over half way there. Want to come to my birthday party?

message 147: by S.M. (new)

S.M. Carrière (smcarriere) Sweet! I'd love to.... but I'm afraid the distance might be an issue. Have your party in Ottawa!

message 148: by Anna (new)

Anna Walls (annalwalls) Well we got almost 46 years to figure out where to have the party so anything's possible.

message 149: by S.M. (new)

S.M. Carrière (smcarriere) Excellent!

Do you let anyone read your writing, or would you consider that "shameless self-promotion"?
