It's (almost) time for another 24B4Monday event!

These are a bit like a read-a-thon, the idea is to read as much as you can from Friday night until Sunday night. The name is inspired by the idea of reading for 24 hours over the weekend, but of course you’re welcome to set your own smaller goal. Whether you’re aiming for 2 hours, 12 hours or 24 hours everyone is welcome to join in.

To get started please share your goals in this thread and then head over to the event progress thread and grab a post to keep track of your reading.

Be on the look out for some additional, small games throughout the weekend!

Happy reading!

Intro Questions

1. How many hours are you aiming to spend reading this weekend?
If you would prefer to provide your updates in pages then please do so. The idea is to read as much as possible so we wouldn't want the format to distract from the reading :)

2. Which books are you planning to read?

3. How are you doing with the Around the Year in 52 books challenge? Ahead, behind, right on schedule?

4. Tell us about the best book you’ve read for the Around the Year challenge this year.

1. How many hours are you aiming to spend reading this weekend?
- I'm terrible at tracking my time reading (too distracting) so I'll just be keeping track of my page numbers instead. I'm aiming to read 750 pages, which will finish out this book I have in progress, as well as my next book for ATY.

2. Which books are you planning to read?
- I want to finish A Woman Is No Man by Etaf Rum and read all of Brida by Paulo Coelho. After that, I'll probably continue on with ATY reads.

3. How are you doing with the Around the Year in 52 books challenge? Ahead, behind, right on schedule?
- I'm one book behind, which is a bummer, but I've already finished my book club book this month so I know I'll catch up pretty easily.

4. Tell us about the best book you’ve read for the Around the Year challenge this year.
- This is such a tough one. My biggest surprise was The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton... I enjoyed it a lot more than I was expecting to.

Bec | 1338 comments I needed this last weekend...it was a long weekend for us and I got a lot of reading in! Not sure how I'll go this weekend but I'll play. Although it's Friday 9am here already and I read on the train but can't work out how many pages as I didn't keep track.

1. How many hours are you aiming to spend reading this weekend?
If you would prefer to provide your updates in pages then please do so. The idea is to read as much as possible so we wouldn't want the format to distract from the reading :)
Ummm, I actually have no idea so I'm going to go for 300 pages - 100 per day.

2. Which books are you planning to read?
I'm about 40% through The Secret River so I want to finish that.

3. How are you doing with the Around the Year in 52 books challenge? Ahead, behind, right on schedule?
According to the tracking thingy I'm 1 book ahead of schedule! I currently have 2 on the go - 1 kindle and 1 audio, so hopefully I can stay ahead. I tend to get distracted with ARCs.

4. Tell us about the best book you’ve read for the Around the Year challenge this year.
So I went to my 2019 ATY folder and sorted by rating. I actually had 4 x 5 star review books. The Scorpio Races - week 11 book related to one of the 12 Zodiac Chinese Animals,
It Ends with Us - week 13 - New Your Public library staff picks list, The Rebellious Sister - week 51 - published in 2019, The Loyal Friend - week 42 - book with a monster or 'monstrous' character (it had warewolves)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3271 comments I had no idea this was happening this weekend, but I wish it included Monday as well since I have that day off work!

1. How many hours are you aiming to spend reading this weekend?
I'll aim for 12, I guess. I don't really keep track of my reading by time, but I also have no idea how many pages I want to read either. I'll estimate around 500. But to be fair, it's not the ideal weekend since I have quite a bit of work to do over the weekend that will eat up at least one day.

2. Which books are you planning to read?
Ideally, I'd love to finish City of Lost Souls, which I'm starting tonight, and get at least a start on City of Heavenly Fire

3. How are you doing with the Around the Year in 52 books challenge? Ahead, behind, right on schedule?
I've read 30 books, but my challenge has a total of 55 instead of 52 because I add my wild card as an extra prompt, and there was one prompt that I'd split into three books.

4. Tell us about the best book you’ve read for the Around the Year challenge this year.
Surprisingly, the best books that I've read this year so far mostly have not been for ATY! I think if I had to pick one book, I'd pick The Rosie Result. I almost missed out on this one since I somehow didn't find out that it even existed until well after my plans were finished. As soon as I found out about it, I knew I had to rearrange things to fit it in, and it was definitely worth it. It shows Don and Rosie as parents of a young teenager, and had the same kind of humour as the rest of the series.

Wow, I had no idea a third book had been published! I really need to get it together and read book 2 still.

message 7: by °~Amy~° (new)

°~Amy~° (amybooksit) 1. How many hours are you aiming to spend reading this weekend?
I'd like to read 900 pages but I don't know how that will actually happen! I have a funeral to prep for on Monday and we have to work all day on Sunday.....maybe 9 pages is a better goal!

2. Which books are you planning to read?
During the day I am pecking away at Becoming. At night I am reading The Trouble With Magic. After that I have 20th Century Ghost: A Story from the Collection 20th Century Ghosts and Murder on the Orient Express lined up.

3. How are you doing with the Around the Year in 52 books challenge? Ahead, behind, right on schedule?
I am done with AtY! I gave myself a 55 book rejects challenge (huge!) that I am 20 books from completing. We will see how that goes I guess!

4. Tell us about the best book you’ve read for the Around the Year challenge this year
Hm, I have read a lot of 5 star books this year, but I think I am most excited about Old Man's War, I am a few books into the series now and I can not wait to dive back into the next one!

4. Tell us about the best book you’ve read for the Around the Year challenge this year.
I loved The Keepers of the House by Shirley Ann Grau, published in 1964 and winner of the Pulitzer Prize. It had great characters and atmosphere.

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments 1. How many hours are you aiming to spend reading this weekend?
12? Hoping to make some progress with the FTC since earlier this week I was feeling a little unsure of my goal to try and finish all the prompts.

2. Which books are you planning to read?
Finish The Invisible Mountain
Then I have some options: Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City, Zero K, Difficult Women, Emma, Vol. 01

3. How are you doing with the Around the Year in 52 books challenge? Ahead, behind, right on schedule?
I think ahead.

4. Tell us about the best book you’ve read for the Around the Year challenge this year.
I have a few short story collections I've really liked. I'm going to go with The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories. Most were sci fi, but there was some historical fiction/alternate fiction. I remember feeling absolutely destroyed by one of them and empty inside it was so good (can't tell you which one though, because I don't remember!).

message 11: by Fee (new)

Fee | 233 comments 1. How many hours are you aiming to spend reading this weekend?
I'll try to read 300 pages. I think that will be around 6 hrs for me.

2. Which books are you planning to read?
I try to finish my current book, The Broken Eye. The last book of the series comes out end of the month.

3. How are you doing with the Around the Year in 52 books
I'm behind. I read too many big books but I enjoyed most of them.

4. Tell us about the best book you’ve read for the Around the Year challenge this year.
I read a lot of books I really liked but Where'd You Go, Bernadette still stands out for me.

3. How are you doing with the Around the Year in 52 books challenge? Ahead, behind, right on schedule?
I´m on schedule! Much to my surprise. I´ve really been lacking in the tracking department this year. But this week I just managed to match books I´ve read to prompts.

4. Tell us about the best book you’ve read for the Around the Year challenge this year.
Krigens monstre (Monsters of Men)
Don´t remember if I ended up using it for "black cover" or "monstrous character" since it fits both beautifully.

I’m going to try for 24 chapters of books so I can keep with the 24 theme

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Not posting the questions here because the girls and I have been in crisis and yesterday was a horrible day. However, I have been trying to read some and knock off some prompts for the challenge. I cant believe this will be the first year since I've joined that I wont be able to finish. If I do it will be a miracle.

I did read Where the Red Fern Grows on friday.... all of it. Tear jerker. Such a good book, it's another one that I hope my girls will enjoy soon.So that ticked off a prompt!!! And I'm 40 pages into
New Boy for the Shakespeare prompt.

I don't have specific goals, just to use this to try and encourage me to read again.

Not sure what would be the best book I've read so far this year. I did really enjoy The Knife of Never Letting Go, On the Come Up, and Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened ( I think in that order lol)
