Fantasy: Prince locked in dungeon

Prince is thrown in dungeon. While he is trapped he finds he is able to draw upon the powers of his ancestors. There is a scene where he scries through the chamber pot. I think he escapes at the end. Read in late 1990's, was supposed to be a series.
