Joy The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas is about a African American teenage girl named Starr who has to live in almost two different worlds. At home, she lives in a poor neighborhood, but when she goes to private school, she is surrounded by mostly white, privileged kids who live a different life than she does. When a police brutality tragedy happens to one of her close friends, Starr fights for justice for her friend, and stands up for her race as a whole. This story focusses on the topic of police brutality, and how it is like living as a minority in America. It teaches that having the same courage as Starr can make a positive change in America. I enjoyed this book because I can personally relate to because when I am with my extended family members, they do not go to private school or live in the best parts of town, so when I am with them vs. my school friends, I feel like I am in two completely different worlds. The best part of the book was when Starr was at the protest and she stayed despite the police officers that wanted to shut it down. It shows how brave she was, and how important it is to stand up for your beliefs. I would recommend this book to anyone, but especially people who don't know what it is like to live as a minority.
