It’s a mystery/romance. This woman has to go back to where she went to college I believe Cambridge for her job ( I can’t remember what it was). Throughout the book it goes back to when she was in college and she was on the row team and one of the guys on the team and her fell in love and then one night he drowns. When she goes back to her college and starts asking around she ends up finding out stuff that lead up to his death and secrets kept about it. She has a really good friend who lives there still but had MS I believe and guys end up breaking into her house and beating her up and taking her computer which I believe has information about his death on it. One part of the book the entire team goes and gets matching tattoos then they go to a bar and that’s where the main girl and her boyfriend( before he dies) sneak out to a shed I believe and makeout. I remember that the boyfriend lived in the boat house or row house I don’t remember what they called it. Another part of the book they are sitting on the roof above where everyone was eating and they talked while looking down at everyone. While she is there for work she meets this guy at some type of cocktail party or book reading I don’t remember what it was and they meet when she rushed out die to emotion and feeling sick and he follows to check on her. He ends up being an old friend of her late boyfriend and then they fall for each other and he ends up being behind his death and there’s a lock box and a ring involved. Also a chest filled with her dead boyfriend stuff from when they were in college.

I found one searching online that fits the general plot but not sure about all the details you mention. It's called Almost Home by Pam Jenoff.
