Fantasy Novel about the afterlife with a main character who dies by human sacrifice

I’ve done everything I can to find the name of this book series but I’m coming up blank but here’s what I remember:

1. The first book starts out with a warrior being ritually sacrificed by Aztec priests and dies - I know the aztec thing happens in the prologue, the protagonist is in a battle, gets hit on the....leg?....with one of their weapons that has the obsidian teeth, wakes up in Tenochtitlan just in time to have his heart cut out of his chest. I think his family may have been killed before the battle that injured him.

2. He comes back to life in an afterlife realm that basically incorporates the afterlife beliefs of all religions, so you have like fairies walking around with Vikings, all the way up and down history. I vaguely remember fairy elements as well, centaurs specifically for some reason.

3. Theres a woman who he befriends who basically introduces him to the world and I think him and the woman get involved romantically

4. Then something happens that starts a war in the afterlife which basically puts technology users vs the more peaceful/naturalistic elements of population. For some reason his experience as a warrior catapults him into a leadership position for the good guys like theres a lack of military know-how for some reason.

5.I know there are at least 3 books in the series but I want to say there could be as many as 5 and I vaguely remember reading them between the years of...2002 to 2006?

I know this isn't much to go on but I would be thrilled if someone has an idea!!!! Thanks!
