Kr | 5 comments As a librarian, may I add "an authorized facsimile, made from the microfilm master copy of [an] original dissertation ... published by UMI" (UMI Dissertation Information Service)?

There is no ISBN but it is in book form. If so, are there any special considerations? Do I assume correctly that the date printed is the publishing date rather than the date the dissertation was submitted?

Is this something that is available to the public for purchase (or otherwise)?

Kr | 5 comments Yes, though it is now sold by ProQuest, the successor to UMI Dissertation Service, who produced the copy I got through interlibrary loan.

Then it sounds like it meets our criteria for being a published book.

However, the printing date should only be used as the publication date if the printing differs in some significant way (such as a different cover) from the original publication.

Kr | 5 comments I strongly doubt the original dissertation would have been hard bound, as the facsimile is. That would seem to constitute a different cover.

Thank you very much for your help!
