Lynette Caulkins | 147 comments Follow the Link

Where the next book you read has something that ties it to the book you just finished. (author, series, setting, publish date, word from the title. . . )

message 2: by Agnieszka (last edited Oct 01, 2019 12:13PM) (new)

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 824 comments Theme: We count on you

- a number for each month and it can refer to series # or be a # in title, # of author's contributing to or book included in a book set, ...
- or different monthly mathematical topic (books linked in any way to math, books with the different kinds of # in title/series names [cardinal, ordinal, fraction words], covers showing anything a person links to math or numbers or with gemetric shapes of any kind, ...)
I've joined several interesting challenges in the past - here two examples: Fibonacci Sequence or Math Can Be Fun!

I especially like this as a theme. We could make it more interesting by alternating. First you pick a title then the next book has to link to the title then the next one links by character/author name then links by genre, etc.

message 5: by Jannene (new)

Jannene | 868 comments A monthly challenge could be a buddy read. You say you want to read X and someone or someone’s has to read it with you. If no one says they want to read it then you pick another read or bounce onto someone else’s book they want to read.

This way you end up “meeting” other people with your same interests.

message 6: by Karen (new)

Karen Johnson | 5 comments Colors, the book title would have to have a color in it. You could even choose a specific color. I can think is several books with red in the title.

Zodiac: What's Your Sign?

There are twelve signs to spread across the months.
🐏 🐂 👬 🦀 🦁 👧 ⚖ 🦂 🏹 🐐 🏺 🐟

The four elements -- Earth, Air, Fire, Water -- could be worked into quarterly challenges.
🌎 💨 🔥 💧

Other monthly and yearly challenges could be based on various factors:
🔸 colors (Gold, Yellow, or Orange for Leo)
🔸 lucky numbers (1, 3, 10, 19 for Leo -- number in title or in series)
🔸 strengths, weaknesses, likes, dislikes (character traits)
🔸 symbols like Lion (Leo), Twins (Gemini), etc.
🔸 author's star sign
🔸 character's star sign
🔸 planets, sun, moon, constellations

This is where I found out that the zodiac signs even have colors and lucky numbers associated with them. Who knew?

Ilona | 4698 comments I'd like to nominate Bookstore Genres! :)

message 9: by Rachael (new)

Rachael (allons-y-bookworm) | 4738 comments I'm going to suggest Myths and Legends which could also include Fairytale retellings

message 10: by Catka (new)

Catka | 270 comments Food
I recently enjoyed the challenge about books - food pairing, but it might be broader. Cookbooks, authors coming from kitchen to writing (or the other way around), food around the world.
It is just my favourite combination in the world :)

message 11: by Pooja (last edited Oct 02, 2019 01:14AM) (new)

Pooja (poojadukhi) | 22 comments Year 2020 is going to be celebrated as the "International Year of Plant Health" by United Nations. How about "forest/tree" as a theme?? We can read books with forest as the setting? Or where trees play an important part or support the characters emotionally?

message 12: by Leticia (last edited Oct 02, 2019 02:46AM) (new)

Leticia (leticiatoraci) | 85 comments I usually like to have a central theme or to read more in one genre in certain months or to do months with diverse genres that I often leave aside. For example, now in september I was participating in Space Opera September and was only reading space opera/science fiction for one month. Now in October I want to read Gothic and horror.
I had another month where I was reading widely in genres too, like, one romance, one contemporary, one mystery/thriller, one graphic novel/audiobook, or nonfiction/poetry and so on.

message 13: by Carmen (new)

Carmen | 8125 comments I like TerryJane's idea very much and Catka's, too.

message 14: by Mie (new)

Mie | 2164 comments I could see Nature as a theme...
Taking Pooja’s Forest/Trees a little wider to include not just plants, but whatever nature holds including animals, and even the nature of people.
Then you could do seasons, colours, moods, temperature, settings, personal traits, climate change, natural disasters, fiction/nonfiction...

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

I like the Zodiac theme a lot. I was thinking of something similar, but TerryJane did a great job of pulling in different elements that help to broaden the scope.

I’d also be interested in the plant/nature theme. Such great suggestions!

message 16: by Megan (new)

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments The plant/nature/climate theme would be very timely. But I'm nominating/seconding Women of the World!

message 17: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) | 596 comments 2020 is a leap year which means we all get an extra day for reading.

The theme for the year could be "Extra!". I'm not really sure what exactly that could entail but there are so many creative people in this group that I'm sure something fun could be devised.

I wish to second Mie's yearly theme of "Nature."
We will have an entire year of reading, so I like the idea of including not only flora but also fauna (including homo sapiens).

message 20: by Angie (new)

Angie | 250 comments I like Fay's idea "Through the Eyes of a Child".

Also something along the lines of books originally in a language other than your own - Translations?

message 21: by Wolf (Alpha) (new)

Wolf (Alpha) | 317 comments I like Miranda's suggestion: Retold Fairy Tales and the Myths & Legends suggested by Rachel.

message 22: by Janet (new)

Janet (goodreadscomjanetj) | 784 comments I like the Genre idea and I also like the literary awards idea.

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm not very good with ideas for various reasons, but would like to say that I like the idea of fairy tale/myth or that your next book has to some how link to the previous book you read

message 25: by Lindsay (last edited Oct 04, 2019 06:19AM) (new)

Lindsay | 1337 comments Tokyo will host the summer Olympics in 2020 and I think Olympics would be a good theme. The core values of the Olympic movement are excellence, respect and friendship which are appropriate for our group.

The Olympic creed says that the most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well,

Similarly to the Olympics this group brings together all different people from all over the world with a shared passion.

There are lots of things associated with the Olympics that would be a great basis for monthly challenges.
The Olympic Rings representing flags and continents
Host cities
The torch relay
The Olympic flame
National anthems
Inclusion
Goals
Sports
Teams
Pride
Medals
The Olympic village
Games
Opening and closing ceremonies
Controversies
Heroes
Triumph over adversity
Greece
Sportsmanship

Great idea, Lindsay! I'm not much into sports but I think the group could do a lot with the Olympic spirit idea.

Sunny | 2311 comments Accidentally deleted my post from yesterday! Think a new brain should be on my Christmas list!

How about:

The Child In All of Us

Books to be read under this theme would be books that are for Kindergartners through 3rd graders.

message 28: by oshizu (last edited Oct 05, 2019 10:38AM) (new)

oshizu | 5762 comments Oops, I didn't mean to derail Mie's suggestion of a "Nature" theme, only to second it.
I prefer "Nature" as a theme because "Flora & Fauna" would exclude many other natural phenomena. Minerals and rocks, in particular, would feel sadly neglected....

message 29: by Sabah (new)

Sabah | 75 comments Really like the Follow the link idea, whether as a theme or a challenge. I also really like the Zodiac sign idea by TerryJane

I think this theme could be used very creatively for a monthly or quarterly challenge.

I had all kinds of nature in mind, when I suggested it, so I would definitely say it should include animals 😊

Darlene (gryffreads) | 27 comments Theme Nomination: College Calendar?
You declare what subjects of books you are going to read for 3, 4-month terms.
For instance, pick 3-5 of the following:

Anthropology 320 -- study of people -- anything pop culture, architecture, social issues etc (Non-fiction) or fiction works that involve these
English 100 -- literary canon of any kind of Western literature
Drama 200 : Ancient theatre -- read a play/non-modern literature (pre-1950)
Biology 325: -- main character that is an animal/living creature other than human or biology non-fiction
Media Studies: Film & TV --ie biographies of celebrities/ fiction around TV/Movies
History 455 -- Colonialism-- read a translated work from a colony, or a book set in such.
