Going to jump in on this one. I read Divergent several years ago but never got around to the rest of the series. Are you reading Four as well or just the main three books?

Ch 1 - 10

I read this book several years ago and I've been surprised at how much I remember as I'm reading it again. I don't remember much about what comes next (save for one major incident), but as I'm reading, I do.

My biggest issue/question with this first part... well, two really, are :

(view spoiler)[ 1. Why is it seriously such a big deal for kids to change factions? I'm not entirely sure why the factions have to stay so separate, but wouldn't parents want their kids to be in a career and lifestyle that suits them?

2. Why (and I'm sure I'll remember when I read it again) is Eric allowed to be such a brutal, horrible person. Bravery and violence, bullying, trying to get people killed are NOT the same thing. I'm just not sure how he got such control and why no one is doing anything about it. (hide spoiler)]

Ch 11 - 18

I'd forgotten about (view spoiler)[ the serum and how brutal the simulations were. It kind of makes sense but I'm still not really convinced they're not just torturing these kids. It seems a little ridiculous that they're allowed to reject half their initiates and force them into being factionless even if they pass everything. Of course it also seems incredibly unfair that anyone has to be factionless, like... if things don't work out with their first, why can't they go back to their birth faction or join a different one? Not really sure what the point is in forcing people to become basically homeless dirty work people.

I'd also forgotten Tris's mother was born Dauntless. So funny, the book feels so familiar but I'm still wanting to read it quickly to find out what happens.

It almost seems like the Dauntless don't have any real work to do, so they make up all these challenges and dares for them just to keep them occupied and out of trouble. (hide spoiler)]

Ch 19-28

(view spoiler)[ Al's suicide was, of course, the part I remembered most dramatically. So very sad. And of course, I'm guessing (or half remembering) that the serum is how they're planning to force the Dauntless to fight. I still can't quite get over the politics of the Dauntless, and really the factions in general. Glad I don't live in this society. (hide spoiler)]

Ch 29-fin

I never really like when a character (view spoiler)[ loses EVERYONE, and with losing mom and dad within the space of less than an hour, I kind of felt the same here. It's always so hopelessly depressing when everyone dies. Glad Four didn't die too, and yes her mother's death was heroic and so on but seriously... I wanted to learn more about her past as a Dauntless. Pretty amazing how well she hid it for so long. (hide spoiler)]

So this ends the part of the series I've read before. The refresher was nice, and I'm looking forward to the rest of it. While I suppose it's a little bit of a cookie cutter dystopia, it's done well and I think it has a lot of potential.

She decides to go to Dauntless, not her home group of Abnigation. She discovers that her mother used to be dauntless too. She goes with a dauntless born to ride on a zipline over the city and is then more accepted by the dauntless group. (hide spoiler)]
70%: (view spoiler)[ Tris has been through Four's fear landscape and realizes he came from Abnigation too. Now she's with the Erudite leader who is questioning why her results were input by hand and something was wrong with her results. (hide spoiler)]
90%: (view spoiler)[All the dauntless initiates were injected with some sort of serum to make them mindless killing machines. But because Four and Tris are divergent, they are able to maintain their minds. But then Eric threatens Four and they realize they are immune, then the leader of the Erudites makes Four a killing machine with a mind. (hide spoiler)]
100% Re-read this book again in March. I love the concept of having five different factions that have their own unique purpose. But as with everything, absolute power corrupts - the Erudites use their superior intellectual position to try and take control. Love the interaction between Tris and Four.
