For the monstrous character pick for the October Book of the Month, we will be reading It by Stephen King

For more information about the Book of the Month, see the introduction post.

* Part 1 - Chapter 1 - First Interlude
* Part 2 - Chapter 4 - Second Interlude
* Part 3 - Chapter 10 - Third Interlude
* Part 4 - Chapter 13 - Fourth Interlude
* Part 5 - Chapter 19 - Epilogue

Mods will provide one, slightly guided question. Discussion will then be completely open. If you have any questions yourself, feel free to post them. Subsequent comments can then answer whichever questions they find to be inspiring.

- Question: What was your initial reaction to the book? Did it hook you immediately, or take some time to get into?

Ashley (ashleym99) I liked how it jumped right into everything. (view spoiler) This immediately grabbed my attention.

Michelle (mich2689) | 484 comments I just finished Part 1. This was my first King novel and I must say I see why he’s so well-known. He’s an excellent storyteller and hooked me from the start. I found the chapters with the phone calls a little slower paced but I understand how they are important for character development. However, by the time I got done with the first interlude, I was thoroughly spooked and my heart was racing.

Marina | 1312 comments This feels like my first Stephen King novel even though I read The Body in school. It's been so many years so I don't really remember it and I remember even less about Stephen King and his writing style. Now I've just finished part one and I'm sort of getting into the story and feeling a bit more comfortable with his writing. But it feels a lot different from what I usually read.

To me it started out strong, then slowed down a bit with the chapters about the phone calls and different characters and then it really took a strong turn with the first interlude. Now I'm definitely intrigued.

I’m so glad that others felt the same way about the start of the book! I’ve started it about 3 other times but I pushed myself to keep reading this time. I started to really get into with Bev’s phone call and now it’s really picking up.
