Michele I had to limit this list to books I'd read in the past 5 years. Otherwise, it would get out of hand! In no particular order:

The Heretic’s Daughter – Kathleen Kent
Mudbound – Hillary Jordan
Harry Potter Series – JK Rowling
The People of the Book –Geraldine Brooks

But first, read "A Zoo in My Luggage" and "The Bafut Beagles." They were the first two books he wrote about his collecting, and they're full of humor and interesting characters. My mother and I read our copies literally to rags, and we giggled every time.

Well, #1 is by S. E. Hinton. The other two come from fantasy series, but I don't remember which ones. (Try looking them up here on Goodreads!)

Laura Martin As of right now, in no particular order, but as with all, they are subject to change at a moment's notice!

11-22-63 - Stephen King
It - Stephen King
The Talisman series - Stephen King
Outlander Series - Diana Gabaldon
The Stormlight Chronicles - Brandon Sanderson
The Kingkiller Chronicles - Patrick Rothsfuss
The Oxford Time Travel Series - Connie Willis
The Farseer Series - Robin Hobb

Pride and Predjudice

can't narrow down any more at this time

message 76: by Elanna (last edited Dec 02, 2014 05:15PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Elanna So painful. I will just think of ten of them and write them down without a second thought.

Ulysses - James Joyce
Heart of Darkness - Joseph Conrad
La Divina Commedia - Dante Alighieri
Moby Dick - Herman Melville
À la Recherche du Temps Perdu - Marcel Proust
The Communist Manifesto - Marx & Engels
The Art of War - Sun Tzu
The History - Elsa Morante
Fahrenheit 451 - Ray Bradbury
Animal Farm - George Orwell

I see only now that these are actually the ones I consider as the most important, more than the best written. The first five of them simply tick all the boxes :)

Uthpala Dassanayake 1.Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie
2.Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt
3.Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier
4.Quiet Flows the Don by Mikhail Sholokhov
5.Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi
6.The Good Earth by Pearl S Buck
7.Babel Tower by A.S. Byatt
8.Anthills of Savannah by Chinua Achebe
9.The Beach by Alex Garland
10.Unless by Carol Shield
If I am to remove the two memoirs here and add novels in their place,
.Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carol
.Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood
just finding an excuse to add more books :)

Randall Christopher Let's see if I can do this. Not sure of the order, except Da Vinci Code at number one. I think it would be the following, though it might change over time:

The Da Vinci Code - Dan Brown
Angels and Demons - Dan Brown
The Phantom Tollbooth - Norton Juster
Ishmael - Daniel Quinn
Timeline - Michael Crichton
Shutter Island - Dennis Lehane
Thr3e - Ted Dekker
The Lord of the Rings - J.R.R. Tolkien
The Eight - Katherine Neville
Jurassic Park - Michael Crichton

Randall Christopher KryZad The Last Knight Templar wrote: "1. Angels and Demons by Dan Brown
2. Inferno by Dan Brown
3. The Godfather by Mario Puzo
4. Lord of the Rings by J.R.R Tolkien
5. Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom
6. The Hobbit by J.R...."

The only one on this list I haven't read is The Godfather. Excellent taste in books I might say. A lot of these are in my top 10, and the others are very near the top as well. I'd say top 25 at the very least.

message 80: by Bob (new) - rated it 5 stars

Bob Van Arsdale Subject (...of course...) to revision, new releases, vagaries of mood, etc., for as long as my eyes, my heart, and my brain hold out:

(1) "Labyrinths" -- by Jorge Luis Borges

(2) "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass" -- by Lewis Carroll; since I have a copy where both books are published within the same binding, I've lumped them together...

(3) "The Odyssey" -- attributed to Homer

(4) "The Arabian Nights" -- the 1001 Tales, however titled; likely attributable to multiple storytellers

(5) "The Inferno" -- by Dante Alighieri. It's embarrasing to admit it, but I have never read any translation of the entire "Divine Comedy"; not yet, anyway...

(6) "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" -- by Samuel Clemens

(7) "If On a Winter's Night a Traveler" -- by Italo Calvino

(8) "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" -- by Edgar Allen Poe. One of the earliest compilations.

(9) "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" -- by Jules Verne

(10) "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" -- by Arthur Conan Doyle

Phillip Only ten. That is hard, especially since there can't be a single list of all time favorites because there are different kinds of favorites. It boggles my mind not to have Walden Pond on the list or The Big Year. But the limiter of ten means some beloved books will have to be left off. What about the Edgar Rice Burroughs of my youth or the philosophy texts of my undergraduate days. But here is my list at this minute.

1. Being and Nothingness, Sartre
2. Lord of the Rings, Tolkien
3. Silmarillion, Tolkien
4. Moby Dick, Mellvile
5. The Naked Lunch, William S. Burroughs
6. Paradise Lost, Milton
7. V: a novel, Pynchon
