message 24: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments My dad always told me that there are three types of humans on this planet. First there’s the Sheep. The everyday types who live in denial—spoon-fed by the morning news, chewed up by another monotonous workday, and spit back out across the urban streets of the world like a mouthful of funky meatloaf that’s been rotting in the back of the fridge. Basically, the Sheep are the defenseless majority who are completely unwilling to acknowledge the inevitability of real danger, and trust the system to take care of them. Next you’ve got your Wolves. The bad guys who abide by no societal laws whatsoever but are good at pretending when it suits them. These are the thieves, murderers, rapists, and politicians, who feed on the Sheep until they’re thrown in prison, or better yet, belly up in a landfill alongside sheaves of your grandma’s itchy hand-knit Christmas socks. The ones you ritualistically blow up every year with an M80. And lastly, you have people like us. The McCrackens. The Herders of the world. Sure, our kind may look a lot like Wolves—large fangs, sharp claws, and the capacity for violence—but what sets us apart from the rest is that we represent the balance between the two. We can navigate the flock freely, with the ability to protect or disown as we see fit. My dad says that we’re the select few with the power of choice, and when real danger arises, we’ll be the ones who survive—and not just because we own a 357 Magnum, three glock G19’s, and a Mossberg pump-action shotgun, but because we’ve been prepping, in every possible badass way, since as long as I can remember, for the inevitable collapse of society as we know it.

That is are my favorite lines in the reading, and I know y'all are listening to it, so you can't really highlight stuff, but I would love to know a.section that you liked/ thought meant somrthing. I feel like a teacher, but I just want to make a system. Then again, we shouldn't really have a system for this whole thing, so I don't really know. I guess just throw stuff out there and we'll chat.

message 25: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments Throughout the whole day too. Not just certain hours.

message 26: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments Also, I'm loving this book, because it takes a real life problem today, and instead of focusing on CLIMATE CHANGE, it focuses more on a drought perspective, where it's narrowing in on one thing affected by climate change. I can't wait till the ending tho, because I want to see how they all survive!

Plus I'm really into climate change, so I'm already a fan of this book!

message 27: by Katya (new)

Katya Brown (katya58) | 15 comments I just started Chapter 2. Don't like it much so far.

message 28: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments Hmmm. why not?

message 29: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 0 comments I only got to listen to part of the first chapter, family stuff happened so I'm out for a day or two but will catch up! I really like the story concept and am intrigued at how it will play out - it's relevant to real life which adds to the overall desperate feel to it imo.

message 30: by Katya (new)

Katya Brown (katya58) | 15 comments Most of the characters are annoying. I hope that the teenage POV will not limit the story. Maybe I am being too judgemental too soon. This year I have been unsatisfied with the majority of YA I tried to read. Part of it is that I am bored with the superficial and immature characters and writing.

message 31: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments Ya, that's why I'm into it too. You will like the first chapter I think. It's crucial. And sad. A little...

message 32: by Lulu (new)

Lulu (lulureads365) I’m interested so far. It reminds me of Octavia Butler’s The Parable of the me Sower.

Question, is the drought only in California?

message 33: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments I get what your saying Katya, but adults tend to prefer adult novels over YA. I do think the teen is annoying but only because the writer makes her sound like a boy. It's supposed to be a girl, but I keep getting confused about what is happening, and why get onto a lid for doing nothing but trying to help, thinking that he will want to steal their water????? also. Usually teens are immature

message 34: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments I think so. It says in the bio it's in California and nowhere else. It's the California drought... But, I think the author/ people interpret it to apply to everwhere. He just wanted to base it off of something really happenenpimg. Like p, there's no drought in every single country...

message 35: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 0 comments haha I'm an adult and only read YA really.. sometimes characters can be more obnoxious but overall I find the stories easier to get lost in and more enjoyable. Funny, as a teenager all i read was adult crime thrillers and now I can't really stand those..

message 36: by Katya (new)

Katya Brown (katya58) | 15 comments I don't hate YA. YA and Middle Grade books are intresting to me because they have lots of imagination and creativity.

I am only 24 years old and still definatly appreciate books written for younger readers. However, I am picky in which books I read. Climate Change is an important topic. Thats why I hope the books is careful with the way it treats it. Especially since I live in California. I dont want to read about a stupid whiny teenager. I want to read about the drought and how people reach to it. Hopefully this book takes the drought seriously and not just turn into a romance story later on.

message 37: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments They're will be no romance or I quit!!! The teenager is not whiny I wouldn't say, just scared. Theres NO WATER! would you not be scared! I don't know how itll, turn out good though

message 38: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments Oops, no comma

message 39: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments Typo

message 40: by Lulu (new)

Lulu (lulureads365) She seems pretty level headed so far.

message 41: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments Ya. But, she's gonna have to have some crazy idea to help her family get out of this mess.

message 42: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments Why don't they move?

message 43: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 0 comments I looked it up on common sense media... the educational value got 5 stars and states that it presents questions about self-reliance, community preparedness and the impact of climate change. As far as romance/sex content it states that a minor character trades unspecified sexual favors for water and that Kelton has had a crush on Alyssa but doesn't sound as if that is a primary focus of the story. If that helps ease anyone's mind!

message 44: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments Nice! I love common sense. I always use it to see if a movie is focusing on romance and stuff like that.

Anways, Wednesday will be 3-4 just to be clear so no one gets spoiled on.

message 45: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 0 comments Moving can be a hard thing to just do.. especially when the draught first hits and there is maybe still some hope of it not lasting long. Jobs, money, its hard to pack up and move, especially with a family. But also, I'd imagine if it's focused on that one area, people would eventually make attempts to move at least temporarily surely..

message 46: by Katya (new)

Katya Brown (katya58) | 15 comments I’m willing to listen on and see what happens.

message 47: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments True. His friend is moving out you remember. It's a girl but i forgot her name.also are the flashbacks or cutscenes or story about someone else about the main girl? what are the random story's in there for? Is it another fam. bam. I guess?? Or are they just not connected to the main people at all...

message 48: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 0 comments There are like 5 different narrators for the audiobook so my guess was that it's told from multiple different family perspective but not positive.

message 49: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 0 comments So.. I'm listening now while I have some downtime at work.. My chapter 3 is Kelton's part with that whole speech about sheep/wolves that @parcival posted earlier for Ch 1-2... Thinking the audio is set up different so that may make staying on the same pace difficult >.<

message 50: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 0 comments Since I'm not positive if my audio chapters are way off from what anyone on here has read, I'm just gonna use spoiler tags on my post here. I listened to ch 1-4 of the Audio which were chapters of Alyssa/Dalton/Kelton/Alyssa.. here's my thoughts so far:

(view spoiler)

I'm enjoying this a lot, but I've liked everything of Neal's that I've read in the past so not too surprising to me.
