Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments So the chapters in this book are confusong, pretty much when it says a new day/ the next day it's a new chapter

message 53: by Lulu (new)

Lulu (lulureads365) I think I'll just come back when everyone is done reading. lol. I'm on chapter 12. I'm loving this so far. Alyssa seems pretty mature for her age.

message 54: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments Oh. Rip.

message 55: by Lulu (new)

Lulu (lulureads365) This is not that cute puppy dog YA. These kids are dealing with some seriously tough issues. I don’t know if the author writes like this consistently, but I’m really impressed so far.

Katya Brown (katya58) | 15 comments I will say that her 10 year old brother is way too sheltered and spoilt. Even at the age of 10 he should understand that a drought is a serious thing. Especially with the fact that his parents are worried. If parents are truly worried kids usually know that a situation is serious...

message 57: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments True. But, parents can be overprotective

message 58: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments I understand what your saying but a 10 year old cannot really have a big understanding of things.

message 59: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 0 comments I think its fairly normal for parents to try to downplay critical events to children that young, to try to keep them from being panicked or terrified. We want to protect our kids, sometimes to their detriment.

message 60: by Katya (new)

Katya Brown (katya58) | 15 comments Kids are not as stupid as people think. He may not fully understand everything, but he knows there is a drought and that they have almost no water in the house. I am actuelly enjoying the story now. Its importand to consider how people are raising children in the topic of Chimate Change. People in America are overprotective and paranoid. I lived in Japan for two years, and I will tell you that by 10 kids go and come from school by themselves. They have to learn to be aware and proactive on their own power. The difference is fascinating.

message 61: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 0 comments @Parcival - have you read chapter 4 yet? Trying to figure it out on the audio version, curious if your ch 4 ends with (view spoiler)

message 62: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments Yes.

message 63: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments I think. I mean I read that part.

message 64: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments I have a bad memory. ;-)

message 65: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments I do see your point tho @katya. America is really protective, and we can't even let kids ride around in bikes for crying out loud. with our culture tho, there is a lot of bad people, and we have to be protective.

Crime is lower today then it was in my parents time. We are just paranoid.

Eh.. I work for a police department and take the calls for missing kids, see all the people who come up as sex offenders against young kids, etc so I'd disagree on that.. but I think it also depends on where you live. Some cities are definitely worse than others and in some places crimes are more broadcast than others. Also, thinking I may be the only mom in this group discussion so I have a different perspective than non parents do.. My kids aren't super sheltered - but I also understand that parental desire to protect them and I know how every kid can handle crisis situations so differently too. No set number is across the board for understanding or behaving in certain situations.

message 68: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments Ya. I see what you mean... I would never shelter my kids (if I had some) bc kids should know about real world problems, but then again I don't want them watching pornography all over the web

message 69: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments So the world is more dangerous online nowadays then in the 1980's

message 70: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments But, I see what you mean about the crime rate

message 71: by Katya (new)

Katya Brown (katya58) | 15 comments Sorry guys but I have to DNF this books. I can't tolerate Alyssa anymore. If I am going to read a book that deals with the drought and dehydration I want to read one that takes these topics seriously. I really wanted to read and discuss a book with people. Maybe next time.

message 72: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments Lol. I need to keep going, but the storyline really is not helping me either.

message 76: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 0 comments I'm around 60% done. I'm really enjoying it but it could also be because the narration for the audio version is good.

message 77: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments It could be that it's a good book :-D

Sneha (lovegood19) Is 1) Alyssa the 1st chapter

message 83: by Sneha (new)

Sneha (lovegood19) Just started.
Only ten pages in and I am really liking it!

message 84: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Ali Yeh yeh just started

message 85: by Sneha (new)

Sneha (lovegood19) You're reading it?

message 86: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments Cool. We like to grow the community! Of buddy readers. The chapters go by days. so it'll say a new day for every chapter.

message 87: by Sneha (new)

Sneha (lovegood19) I am one chapter in and I have one question-
Are there two stories in this book- Alyssa's and Dalton's?

message 88: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Ali I dont think so.🤔

message 89: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 0 comments The primary storytellers here are Alyssa and Kelton (her neighbor). You'll get 'snapshots' from others like Dalton and reports and such but the only other character who gets ongoing chapters is Jackie, who you meet around the halfway mark I believe.

message 90: by Sneha (new)

Sneha (lovegood19) Thanks, Heather(:

message 91: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 0 comments Welcome! I hope you enjoy this one, I really liked it!

message 94: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments Sorry. I'm done with this book. I really really really wanted this book to be good. We started the buddy read. We were going strong. I was falling behind. I kept telling myself If catch up. And then I decided that it was not worth my time. I was starting new books. It just didn't work out. Sorry I won't be finishing. Have fun reading.

message 95: by Sneha (new)

Sneha (lovegood19) So I just finished Dry.
TBH I got bored in the middle of it and I'm pretty sure I would have Dnf'ed it.
But I kept on reading and it got really good and I love it now.
It's not my favorite but it's pretty good.

message 96: by Sneha (new)

Sneha (lovegood19) If anyone is thinking about not finishing it, I think you should read a little bite more and who knows? Maybe you'll like it.

message 97: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 0 comments I finished it and really enjoyed it myself

message 98: by Lewis (new)

Lewis (parzival1) | 352 comments Good job reading it!
So any suggestions on another book to read?

message 99: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 0 comments Not off hand.. I'd have to think about it to come up with ideas that aren't heavy on romance lol

message 100: by Lewis (new)
