Anita (neet413) | 95 comments Anything by Bentley Little or James Herbert would be good. Little is great at creating moods and really scaring the reader.

Mary reminded me that Halloween is coming up. I'd like to read some scary books but I don't have any on my bookshelf. Scary is not my normal reading genre. I'm looking for ..."

Darcy Coates is an author you need to seek out and I hadn't had a chance to send you some recs. She writes ghost stories and she is excellent at it! So here is the one of the best ghost stories that will have you "looking over your shoulder" and "hearing creaks in your house". :-) Also here are a couple or so more for you of some other authors as well to seek out.

The Carrow Haunt by Darcy Coates

The House Next Door by Anne Rivers Siddons

This one is a classic and it was spooky!
Hell House by Richard Matheson

This is a debut book by an indie author and I loved this book so much that I put it on my favorites shelf! :)
Pandora Reborn by John Coon

This author can really create an atmosphere of spooky situations!
Night Society by Ambrose Ibsen

I thought it best to not recommend books with blood and gore as I don't know what is considered too much for you, so I thought I would play it safe and recommend haunting books instead. :-)

You're welcome! I just finished his book The Town, here's my review:

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8079 comments I recommend The House Next Door. No blood and gore but plenty of suspense and scary stuff if you have a good imagination. Let me know what you think.

Papaphilly | 5045 comments Never Let Me Go is my recommendation. It is a very subtle book and when you finally figure out what is happening, it will both horrify you and blow your mind. No gore either, not a drop.

I'm Thinking of Ending Things is another mind blower and is one taut psychological game.

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8079 comments I'd also recommend Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House. It was written in 1959, but is one of my favorites. You might know Shirley Jackson if you read in high school her short story "The Lottery."
