Angela Panayotopulos | 393 comments Hey all! Sorry I haven't been responding to messages, I've been off the grid for a few days. :) The order looks good, E.M.! Will catch up on my to-reads and to-sends today!

message 58: by Casey (new)

Casey Bartsch | 30 comments I've already received two of my reviews, both terrible, stating that they found the book too violent and graphic. They admit that people have liked the book and it is well written, but they hate the genre, going so far as to attack me stating, "I have no idea why anyone would ever write this." This disheartens me as we are all in the same boat as authors. I thought I could at least find comradery in that regard. I was told by a mod that posting my book in the General group would be fine, despite the content. Please, if you don't like this kind of book and are still scheduled to review mine, just ignore it. Don't read it. Don't write a review. Thanks. Looks like I'm done with GR.

E.M. Swift-Hook | 3487 comments Casey - I regret that you feel the need to leave the group.

Everyone - We do have a rule here about personal attacks which we all need to respect. I would also point out that in a General Round one can not judge a book simply on the basis of its genre.

In a General Round, one needs to look for the key features that define a good book such as the quality of the writing, characterisation, storytelling etc. and rate on those. Personal comments about disliking the content can, of course, be included, but should not maybe feed into the rating. Try for comments like: 'Although I am not one, for a fan of animal stories this would hit the spot' rather than 'I hate animal stories and can't understand why anyone would want to read or write them.' There is a link in the OP for the round with advice on this if you think you need it.

E.M. Swift-Hook | 3487 comments Thanks for all reviews so far and special thanks to Jaela who has completed her commitment to this round!

The first deadline, for those who have yet to leave the starting blocks, is 4 December.

message 66: by Casey (new)

Casey Bartsch | 30 comments I will still review the books I was assigned. I'm not going to leave anyone hanging. I just don't need anymore reviews like the ones I was getting. The other two reviewers can feel free to ignore my book.

message 67: by E.M. (new)

E.M. Swift-Hook | 3487 comments Thanks for clarifying Casey - and for staying in the round.

Thank you for reviewing your review Francis.

message 68: by Casey (new)

Casey Bartsch | 30 comments Let me try to be a little clearer. I have no desire to stay in the group, however, I made a commitment to 4 fellow authors that did absolutely nothing to lose reviews from me. They deserve to get what they came here for. I am doing this on my own time and they will be up soon.

We are all here for the same reason. We went through our own personal hells to craft a novel we are trying desperately to draw attention to. Nobody without interest in my genre would pick up my book on their own. Obviously.

As an example, I myself hate Romance. Hate it. Can't see why anyone would read it or write it. However, I've read and reviewed 3 of these books (the last one even got 5 stars). I know I can't review based on my liking of the story, so I leave that out. I speak on the style, the writer's ability, the flow of the story, etc. I do not drop stars off the review because I don't like Romance. I do this because I'm reviewing for a fellow author. Regardless of my desire to read their book, I know of their ordeal. I know they put their heart into it and are just trying to get eyes on it. I don't state in my reviews that I hate the genre. I don't state that I would never read it or had to read it because it was assigned to me. I don't preface my reviews with words disparaging the author. I will mention that it isn't usually the genre I read only to give context to the review.

For me, this way of writing reviews is just the right thing to do. I am not trying to tear down other writers for their genre of choice. Clearly, the reviewer of my book didn't believe that their words were an attack on me (as shown by quotes around the words attack and offending), but they were. They were an attempt to delegitimize my work. I don't care if the review stays and certainly don't have the stance that all reviews from fellow authors should be glowing. What I'm saying is, I don't want to be a part of a group with members that would actively degrade another author's work.

Finally, I would like to express my sincere and deep appreciation for the people that have contacted me in messages to show support. I truly appreciate it. This isn't about me having a thin skin; trust me, I've had plenty of bad reviews, but there is no reason to put myself in a situation where this type of behaviour exists. I'm aware that most here have no care whatsoever for what I am saying and to those, I'm sorry for wasting your time. Hopefully, you stopped reading a long time ago.

message 69: by Jay (new)

Jay Saph (jaysaph) | 31 comments I feel the same way, Casey. We should only care what readers who have actively chosen our books think. They care about a good story.
Best of luck Jay

E.M. Swift-Hook | 3487 comments I am not a fan of doing the 'mod says' thing, but I really think we need to draw a line and move on, please.

message 71: by Angela (last edited Nov 21, 2019 01:59PM) (new)

Angela Panayotopulos | 393 comments (Sorry EM!) Not to keep hitting the nail on the head, but let me just say that we, like our books, are all works in progress... and disagreements such as these also lead to valuable conversations. This exchange reminds me of my own obligation to be as objective as possible while offering honest critiques fearlessly yet compassionately. We're all in the same boat; indie author life isn't the easiest. Casey and Francis reacted with mutual respect, and that, too, is exemplary for all of us going forward. We're all in this to support each other.
