5 of 2On the Come Up
by Angie Thomas
narrated by Bahni Turpin
I voted for this one even before I finished it. The narrator added so much to this book about a high school rapper named Bri. 5 star read!

Updated msg 4Took me almost a month but I finally finished my write-in nominee for Best Fiction: Lost Children Archive
4.5 stars
Progess: 8/6
Thank you for leading this challenge, Megan!
Update to msg #44:6/6 completed!
6. With the Fire on High (YA Fiction)
Really loved this one, wish I'd finished it in time to vote for it!
I'm actually currently reading Miracle Creek, and I *think* I might be able to get it done before the deadline -- let's see!

Congrats on completing the challenge!
Just completed another History pick - Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland by Patrick Radden Keefe. This was an excellent read! I loved the writing - nonfiction narrative is the best! And I learned so much about a topic that I knew of remotely but had never deep-dived into. Now I want to watch all the documentaries and follow-up books the author suggested. Definitely worth reading! 5 starsHonestly, I would have probably voted for this if I had read it during the voting period. So good!
13/10
Update: 7/4Read The Toll. I don't think this one will win, but I thought it was a fantastic end to the trilogy. My YA fantasy vote was for King of Scars but I would be happy if either won.
I really enjoyed this challenge - I got round to a bunch of books that I'd been meaning to read.
I just completed my selection for YA Fiction - With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo. This was a fabulous novel! Her writing style definitely reflects her poetry. I loved the recipes, and felt that the characters were well-crafted. I really appreciate that the author touches on topics of race, teen pregnancy, stigma, sexism, colonialism, etc. She addresses these topics with a deft hand. Definitely worth reading! 5 starsI'm sticking with On the Come Up for the win, but this was a fabulous book!
14/10

but it only confirmed my opinion about these popular votes.
Yeah, only 1 of them is a book I voted for.I'm probably going to finish a nominee tonight -- can I still count it as part of the challenge despite the winners already having been announced? I didn't get time to finish it yesterday.

As long as you complete it by midnight, it can count.
I'm also surprised by the final award winners. Oh well, at the least the earlier rounds contained some great picks!
Megan wrote: "I'm also surprised by the final award winners. Oh well, at the least the earlier rounds contained some great picks!"What I liked most about the voting is that it encouraged me to read a few books that I would otherwise not have finished in 2019.
And, even if only one of the books I read for this challenge won in its category (Recursion), I did read a handful of great books!
Thanks for leading this challenge so enthusiastically, Megan!
Even though my books don't tend to be winners, I hope this challenge will be repeated next year. I read and really enjoyed a bunch of books I wouldn't have picked up without the challenge. Thanks for leading Megan!
update to message #44:7/6
completed Miracle Creek
Just managed to get it done before midnight. I wasn't a big fan, and it was a slog to the finish line!
Thanks for running this challenge, I enjoyed getting through the nominees!
