I think I read this in around 2003 and it was set in "modern" times. Basically a guy in america is told that he is one of a few who can cross to another dimension. I think it's basically a chase book because he's pursued by people all through it and I think it was the first of a planned series. There are some Matrix vibes in the story and I think the main protagonist might have had a brother. The book ends with him successfully crossing over.... I think.

Could it be a book from “The Long Earth” series by Terry Pratchett? There are five in the series so far, and they involve a man who has the rare ability travel through other dimensions (the multiverse theory) -other versions of Earth.
Book one is “The Long Earth.” (The only one I’ve read so far, I think.) I do seem to remember an element of him being pursued.
