I’m reading it for the first time as I wasn’t given the chance to read it in school.

message 3805: by Patrick (new)

Patrick O'Connor | 17 comments Just finished the INVADING ENGLAND trilogy by Harry Bold. It was originally published in German and the translation into English is now available. It is an alternate history about how Operation Sea Lion might have gone if Germany had a few more competent people in the right locations, and Britain had a few less. Four-and-a-half stars from me...

Reading Mark Edwards' The Magpies, his first, I believe. I've read a few books by this author, and I like his style. He's sharing my top Kindle library with Nelson De Mille, Elmore Leonard, and Dean Koontz, so he should be grateful! 😉

Mike Sherer | 56 comments 'Zodiac', by Neal Stephenson. I've read nearly all his books, but somehow I missed this old one. It's great. He can mix science (and sci-fi) and action together like no other. Some knowledge of chemistry helps with this one.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 425 comments I read Nothing Holds Back the Night by Delphine de Vigan, translated from the French by George Miller. It's a gripping blend of fiction, memoir, and biography. The author explores her mother's childhood and adult life to try to understand the cause of her suicide. Intense and well-executed.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 425 comments I read Mr. Loverman by Bernardine Evaristo.
It's funny. The central character is an endearing Shakespeare-quoting, dapper individual with a dry sense of humor. Character portrayals are brilliant. Highly recommend this book.

Vince Neil of Motleys Crues autobiography and it is surprising good.

Okay he has a rep as has the entire band but, beneath the glamour their is a glimmers of a kind hearted person who has been hurt a lot. Much as I am sure he would deny it.

message 3847: by J. (new)

J. Rubino (jrubino) Reading Mick Finlay's 4th Arrowood book, "Arrowood and the Meeting House Murders." William Arrowood is a rather uncouth, down-on-his-luck Victorian era detective who is put off by the fact that all of the good and lucrative cases go to that fellow Sherlock Holmes.
About half finished. The plot involves a group of Africans who were brought to England by a showman and the author felt it necessary to write a disclaimer, stating that racial attitudes were different in the 19th century, as was language, and he attempted to be faithful to the times without using certain terms that were highly offensive, though they may have been part of the jargon of the day. I'm not sure it was the right choice - the story so far seems a bit homogenized and not as vivid and candid in its descriptions of Victorian London's underclass as in his previous books. It does raise an interesting question about how you deal with bias issue in historical fiction.
