What are you currently reading (or just finished)?
I completed reading A Tale of Two Cities(Charles Dickens) for the third time. I am now tackling a bulk of a book head on- A Promised Land by Barack Obama.
I read The Weekend by Charlotte Wood.A quick and easy read about the challenges facing three women in their 70s after the death of their friend. I thought it was enjoyable but not particularly moving.
My 3-star review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
The Lost Codex by Alan Jacobson. I am reading for research or inspiration for my manuscript in progress, and The Lost Codex has similarities to my book so I wanted to compare styles and approach.
Currently reading Cities of the Plain, number 4 in the hit series A la recherche de temps perdu by Marcel Proust.
Currently reading The Kitchen Witch by Wendy Wang. The 11th book in this series.https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...
Currently in the middle of
The Spirit Woman another in this mystery series. So far so good, like all the other books I've read in this series.
I read Iza's Ballad by Magda Szabó; translated from the Hungarian by George Szirtes.A meditation on love, grief, and aging. The writing is beautiful, powerful, moving, and heart-wrenching. The character portrayals are compelling. Especially effective is the portrayal of Ettie, the mother.
If you are looking for a translated book, a book on mother/daughter relationships and/or a book with a 70 year old female protagonist, I recommend this very highly. It is the first book I've read by Magda Szabó, but it certainly won't be the last.

I have just finished volumne 4 of la recherche de temps perdu, Cities of the Plain and currently thinking of how to address a review.

I have thought about it - and written the review of Cities of the Plain, volumne 4 of Marcel Proust's epic.https://www.goodreads.com/nl/book/sho...
I Just finished The Practice by Seth Godin and I enjoyed it immensly. It is especially good for creative people.
Philip wrote: "I have just finished volumne 4 of la recherche de temps perdu, Cities of the Plain and currently thinking of how to address a review." I finished it on Sunday. I agree it's not an easy book to rate or review.
Just finished "The Graveyard Garage" only to find out it isn't listed here on Goodreads. If I'm going to hit my 100 books by 100 different authors this year, I'll have to make sure every future book can be checked off.
I read Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell. A beautiful story, beautifully told. O'Farrell immerses the reader in Elizabethan England as she tells the story of Shakespeare's wife and son.My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Just finished Rocket Ship Galileo by Robert A. Heinlein. The plot revolves around a group of high-schoolers executing the first trip to the moon with the aid of a prize-winning scientist. The book was written in 1947 at the beginning of the atomic age, but before we had actually gone to the moon, so it's really cool to see what predictions and methods Heinlein got right and which were off-base. A fun read or audiobook listen.
It's also Heinlein's second published work, so if you're a fan of his later stuff you get to see how he has developed, which is interesting for an author like me.
Rocket Ship Galileo
I am in the middle of Copper Pennies
. I bought the book because I really liked an earlier book by the same author. This one is not connected to the previous book. So far the author has again captured my attention. Hope it finishes as good as it has been so far.
Just started Unspeakable things by Jess Lourey. It's definitely going to be one of those dark books. :-)
I just finished The Last Reality Trilogy this is a young adult series. It starts with Otherworld by Jason Segel and Kristen Miller. Otherearth is the second in this series. Otherlife is the third one. I rated them all 5 out of 5 stars.
I read Mud and Stars: Travels in Russia with Pushkin, Tolstoy, and Other Geniuses of the Golden Age by Sara Wheeler. An engaging mix of history, literary criticism, travelogue, and memoir as Sara Wheeler visits the homes and favorite haunts of famous, nineteenth century Russian novelists.

My Family and Other Animals Some of the most gorgeous description I've ever read. Durrell is a brilliant writer.
Apeirogon by Colum McCann - simply stunning & heart rending.https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/bo...
I read On Black Sisters Street by Chika Unigwe. The circumstances that led four African women to become sex workers in Belgium. Graphic scenes of violence and sexual assault.
A compelling story told in unadorned, straightforward diction.

I am currently reading The Lost Codex by Alan Jacobson The topic sounded intriguing, but after page 56 I am still unsure of the story premise other than cliche terrorist attack in US. I will press on an hope the story gets more imaginative.
I'm reading "The Bohemian Girl" by Kenneth Cameron. It's been on my bookshelf for years, I don't why it worked it's way there, but I'm trying to work through all those unread books that have snuck into my house. I'm also listening to "The Art Forger" by Barbara Shapiro. I've already written one book on art forgery and looking to write another.
Catchup on latest 2 reads:C J Sansom, 4th Shardlake novel Revelation - reviewed - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2981055801
and
A Merritt's Dwellers In The Mirage - reviewed - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1954250587
For my fiction read I am reading The Boy I Am by KL Kettle, it reminds me a little bit of The Lone City by Amy Ewing and I am also reading a non-fiction book too, The History Of Sweets by Paul Chrystal
I just finished Paradise Peak by Janet Dailey. I was pleasantly surprised and it was a lot better than I was initially expecting due to not usually reading romance novels.
I just started It by Stephen King. So my friend has hated Harry Potter for years and I promised her I would read 7 horror books if she read the entire Harry Potter series. This is my fourth book and they're not as bad as I thought.
I read The Door by Magda Szabó, translated from the Hungarian by Len Rix. This is the second book I've read by this author. There is a haunting quality about her writing that lingers with me long after I turn the last page of her novels. I think she is an amazing writer. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I will be starting A Reluctant Bride by Jody Hedlund as the Book Club pick when I receive it. It was a hard choice to choose the ebook or print, but I went with print. I still love the feel of a book, plus I like to see how other books are formatted for print now that I am an author. I want to see if they have good practices I can borrow or steal. Happy reading.
