Catching Fire
question
Haymitch

It has been a few years since I read these books but I am listening to them on audiobook to prepare for Mockingjay (who's excited?).
While I was listening to Catching Fire, I wondered if Haymitch would have saved Peeta if Katniss hadn't been the drive for the Rebellion. Would he? Because it seems like he favors Katniss, despite believing Peeta is the better person. What do you guys think?

Haymitch originally wanted to save Peeta because his words were powerful, his words help turned Katniss into the mockingjay, but Peeta wanted to save Katniss and Peeta wouldn't have it any other way so Haymitch had to go with saving Katniss instead.

Because katniss was so focused on keeping peeta alive, the rebels had to keep him alive for her... They really wanted her to be the symbol of the rebellion... Haymitch did want peeta and so did president coin for that matter.... But overall the rebels wanted the mockingjay.... So it was essential that both she and peeta were kept alive... However, katniss was the priority when it came to who they would retrieve.... Even though her words did not have the effect peeta's did, her actions in the hunger games were profound for the districts
Maybe Katniss reminds Haymitch of himself a little bit, before Haymitch was always drunk. He might feel obligated to save Peeta, however, because like you stated, he believes Peeta is the better person. From there he's got two choices: try to save Peeta or play the "bad things happen to good people card". I think that he probably would have tried to save Peeta if it was possible and he didn't think it would result in mass destruction or something.
I think he may have saved Peeta because Katniss is really tough and Haymitch knows she can hold her own most of the time (plus Katniss does sometimes get on his nerves, so in a split second decision, he might've chosen Peeta instead).
Haymitch is a good guy, even if he's only reliable In life or death situations. Of course he would've saved Peeta. BUT probably only for Katniss's sake and his sake, not for the people of Panem
Haymotch likes Katniss better but I believe that he has only GROWN to like her. Peeta was his favorite from the beginning and Haymitch probably would've saved Peeta first if Katniss wasn't so far from him and if she was not the Mockingjay.
