Did the check-in happen today? I'm having fun regardless of our standing, but I'm still curious how we're doing. :)

Updates

Because I'm crazy I've signed up for some more "light" reading:

-New BR: Drawing of Three Dec. 3rd
-New BR: The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle Dec. 9th
-New BR: Discworld Series Dec. 20th

~Melissa~ Hi all - what's everybody reading?? I'm currently reading two and one is driving me nuts.

Dirty Secret - this book/series has a MC that is Korean. This book has several Korean characters in it and it's hard to keep them all straight in my head. I keep forgetting who is who and if they are a good guy/bad guy etc. Kind of exhausting.
So I started Mine by Mary Calmes for a break - nice cover huh :)
Plus they both work for my Scavenger Hunt team challenge.

Sarah | 3273 comments @ Hilary. I am still waiting for The Midwife's Confession by Diane Chamberlain . I will have it for sure in three weeks, then I get it for three weeks. Do you still want to do a BR. If so we can set up a date?

I am trying to keep up with Big Little Lies but I have had to put it to the side a bit because I am reading Yoga for Anxiety: Meditations and Practices for Calming the Body and Mind for SS ;) I think my library time will end before I can finish BLL and I will have to get back in the holds line! But I am enjoying both books :)

Yes, sounds good! I will check with my library and see if I need to get a hold placed. Last time I checked it was available. Hopefully I can start as soon as you get your copy in :)

message 558: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments OK let me know. How long do you get a book?

message 559: by Christine (new)

Christine | 0 comments I'm currently slogging my way through Les Mis - good book but loooong. Planning to finish it by the end of December.

I'm partway through The Woman in White, and it's pretty good.

Hoping to start Mrs. Dalloway soon before my library lending period expires, and before I start The Bell Jar BR next week.

I'm also hoping that I will maybe be able to get in on the Code Name Verity BR, but probably not until at least December - we'll see.

message 560: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 3595 comments I'm currently reading The Hidden Ones and listening to Code Name Verity. Both are pretty good so far.

I could probably use your Yoga for Anxiety book - I'm sure it's good. We could all use a little calming practices! How far had you got in Big Little Lies ? - I loved it - had a hard time putting it down for other books

Kudos to you for reading Les Mis - I don't think I could do it (sometimes those really long books just scare me off, lol) but it is my absolute favorite Broadway show. We've seen it several times. The Bell Jar sounds interesting - I'll have to add it to my TBR and Code Name Verity sounds like something my son would like. For those that have started it - ok for a 15 yo who loves war books/movies? May have to put on the list for a Christmas present

I love the Harry Potter series. I've re-read at least three times. Saddens me - my kids don't want to read them....but they love the movies.

So far, it's really interesting. It's set in 3 different time periods and it's interesting to see how they come together, but a bit of a mystery in there too. I read it with some good reads friends. They all gave it 4 or 5 stars and one said that it was one of her favorite books this year. It's not a five star read for me. I'm at 70% and leaning towards 4 stars, but not sure yet.

~Melissa~ (~Cainis~ the Elf) wrote: "Code Name Verity sounds like something my son would like. For those that have started it - ok for a 15 yo who loves war books/movies? May have to put on the list for a Christmas present"

If he's interested in war books, it's probably fine for him. I'm at 80% and there has been talk of torture, but it's mostly in the way of she hears it, she is made to watch it, or she is threatened with it. People talk about what was done to people, but not in a real graphic way. You aren't in the room with it, if that makes sense. Otherwise, it's good. If he typically likes war books, he's probably read worse. Started out a bit on the slow side, but it's pretty good now.

Ok, so since I wrote that last comment, the book has gotten a little more graphic. I can tell you what I'm referring to, but it is a big spoiler and will ruin the end of the book. So, I'm going to put it in a spoiler and if you are not planning to read it and don't mind having the end ruined, then you can click it. If not, I will just say that towards the end there is at least one scene that is a bit more graphic with violence. I don't know your son, so it is totally up to you. Some kids can handle that sort of thing at 15. My daughter would probably have been ok with it at 15, but she loved stories about the Holocaust. I'm guessing that if he likes war books it won't be a problem for him, but I didn't want to be that person to say that it's not graphic, then have you realize too late that it was.

(view spoiler)

I finished this today too, so I know what you mean. That was shocking! I would say overall the book is about the same as a PG-13 movie.

message 574: by Logan (new)

Logan (loganturner) | 1643 comments Sorry I have been MIA! There is now an update thread in the TT folder that shows where we are. We are in the bottom half, but we are doing great and I know this total is a little low because I have about 5 books I am finishing this week!

Today I finished Code Name Verity and Ty Hard. I have 20% left on The Lies of Locke Lamora and 45% on Last Sacrifice. I also need to finish Keeping Promise Rock by Friday. Woohoo!

What did you think about Ty Hard?

How far are you in Keeping Promise Rock - I love that series but man, it is emotional and angst filled. Which I'm beginning to realize all/most of Amy Lane's are :)

Thanks for all of that - after reading all of this - I still think he will like it. I may read it with him so he has someone to talk about it with. I got it yesterday for his birthday which is the first week of Dec.

message 581: by ~Melissa~ (new)

~Melissa~ I finished the two books I was working on. Thank god no more Korean names for a little bit -....but that book ended on a cliffhanger which irritates me. So pretty sure I'm ging to get to book 3 soon. I'm afraid to start anything until our new spot is called for SS team challenge in TCF group lol
I'll figure something out

Okay, spreadsheet is updated and I added more rows for everyone. I also did another round of book checks.

Kaora - Tomorrow When the War Began wasn't tagged to your special shelf.

Keep up the great work everyone!

I liked Ty Hard fine - it was rushed because it's shorter and the mystery/drama in the plot was kinda dumb, but I really liked Ty and his struggle to own his sexuality post-DADT and working through his PTSD.

I haven't started Keeping Promise Rock yet - probably tonight.

No problem! I was very interested in your review of that book. People keep trying to get me to read it, but it's never sounded that great to me. I think I'd probably have the same reaction as you. I guess there's a movie version too.

message 585: by ~Melissa~ (new)

~Melissa~ @Kaora - so based on Logan's comment above I went to read your comment. Doesn't sound interesting ...but then I went to look at your review of the 1 star book The Fire Seekers - OMG that was hilarious....again don't think I want to read it - thanks for the laugh - totally hit the spot :)

~Melissa~ I added my two recent reads to our spreadsheet. Maybe I'll start my Ty and Zane re-read :)

Christine | 0 comments I just noticed there is a Buddy Read being organized for January for The Woman in White, which I happen to be reading right now and should finish this week. Since I read the book during the TT Challenge time period, if I participate in the BR thread once the discussion starts, can I claim points for BR participation, even though I will have read the book ahead of the Buddy Read start date?

message 588: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 3595 comments My understanding is that you can get the points that way too. You just need to make sure you discuss the book with someone that is not on your team.

message 589: by Logan (new)

Logan (loganturner) | 1643 comments Yes, you can join the discussion later and add those 30 points then. Just make sure you let us know!

Logan (loganturner) | 1643 comments Good morning elves!

So last night one of my teammates in another challenge told me about a Harry Potter themed team challenge in the group A Million More Pages that will be going all 2015. I saw Taryn over there, and thought I'd share with you all since I know most of us are reading or have read HP and liked them. :)

I'm still anxiously waiting to see where I get sorted!

I love that set with the spines that look like Hogwarts. At one point I owned all of the books, but I think some of them were loaned out and lost somewhere along the way. I may decide to use my Christmas money to buy a new set. :)

message 592: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 3595 comments That's the set I have! I love just looking at it. :)

message 593: by ~Melissa~ (new)

~Melissa~ So I've started two more books. One is a buddy read >> Cut & Run (Cut & Run, #1) by Abigail Roux - this is a re-read but read first time over a yr ago so counts. Ahhh the beginning of Ty and Zane!! My #2 of this series won't count as I re-read recently but will still do it one more time just for consistency, lol. The other book I started is Epitaph (Infected, #8) by Andrea Speed - I'm already up to chap 10. I love this series....I'll be sad to see it end but I can cross it off my FWYS challenge in TCF group and points here - I love when books work for multiple challenges :D
I'm off to read more Ty and Zane....
