lethe | 16359 comments Hi André, I wanted to reply to your message, but it appears that you don't accept messages.

I am taking a break from this project. Every time I tried to catch up with the requests, you responded by posting a whole new bunch, and it started to feel like a Sisyphean task. Very discouraging, especially since nobody else is helping out anymore.

I'm sorry!

It takes time to approve librarian status. The answer they will give you is to be patient, as it depends on staff workload and how many people have applications pending. Your involvement in the librarian group is a positive one toward becoming a librarian, from what I have heard in other threads (though we have no insight into the approval process).
The books being in French and the lack of librarians wanting to pick up a daunting project with hundreds of posts could definitely be part of the reason no one has responded lately. Some of them may be working on their own projects. If I were you, I would just take a break from posting for a little while.
(I have other threads I am committed to already or I would help as well.) Your knowledge of a language other than English is also a positive step toward becoming a librarian, just in my opinion.

The accent marks in your text are not quite right. It may look correct on your computer, but it seems to use a different character-encoding than what this site prefers, and looks distinctly wrong on my computer.

Better: "Les poètes de la modernité : de Baudelaire à Apollinaire"

(I think that a space both before and after the colon is normal in French, even though there isn't one before the colon in modern English.)

message 338: by Ed (new)

Ed Erwin | 84 comments GR librarian manual doesn't cover the case of a hyphenated first name, so I'm never sure whether to follow French convention or English.

A really tough case is J.H. Rosny Aîné

In French it is often J.-H. Rosny aîné, but on this site I suspect they prefer it without the hyphen.

It is extra tough because it is a pseudonym and was used by at least two people (father and son, real name Boex) and sometimes on published editions appears without "aîné" (meaning Sr.) added. And since most of his work is public domain, cheap editions with wrong names are common. For him, I mostly just leave it as I see it!

Ed, thank you for the comment. You are right on the rule of space befiore the :. As a matter of fact, after modernité, there should be a single point and not a double, as there is a capital on the De. I have modified my request for correction.

I cannot speak for GR but the international standard is J.-H. Rosny aîné. See : https://catalogue.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/c...

I am really concerned by what you told me here. The display is indeed correct on my computer but if it is not correct in US, does it means that the GR software provides different results according to the prefered language used ? Part of the problem anyway with a lot of titles of books in French is that no accent at all appear.

Yes, for me they look odd as well*. The accented e's and a appear smaller than the other letters, whereas they look fine in the title that Ed typed.

*But only in that title/comment (#310). Accents in other comments look fine. Maybe you copied the title from somewhere, André?

If the first name has a hyphen, it should be added with a hyphen (and the first letter of the last name should be capitalized 😉 )

I probably copied and pasted the title form the original input to be corrected and made the usual corrections to the capitals. This is also why I missed the D. I should be more attentive, also when one of the author is one of my best friends.

Yes, but in J.-H. Rosny aîné, aîné is not the last name... This is just the distinction with J.-H. Rosny jeune. https://catalogue.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/c...

Ed Erwin | 84 comments lethe wrote: "... If the first name has a hyphen, it should be added with a hyphen."

Yes, but there is no first name! The pseudonym only has initials, usually written in French as J.-H. I'm aware of the standard spelling in the real world, but this site has rules of it's own which they enforce. The rules don't seem to specify to keep or remove the hyphen.

One of the men using those initials was indeed named Joseph Henri Honoré Boex, so J-H could mean Joseph-Henri, but in his real name he spelled it with no hyphens and in the pseudonym he added one.

And as pointed out, "aîné" is not his last name, but is an equivalent of "Sr.", and is not usually capitalized in French. I'm trying to follow the guidelines about how "Sr." and "Jr." are treated.

Fixing stuff for this guy would be tricky. GR rules require using the exact name(s) printed on the title page, even if they are a pseudonym, and even if they are spelled wrong! (We are allowed to also include a link to another profile with the more common spelling in such cases.)

As I said, I mostly just leave things from this guy alone. When I see an obviously wrong one, I may combine it with the existing profile, but otherwise I just let it be. Too confusing! It is often unclear which works were from "aîne" or "jeune" or both writing together.

This guy could be a discussion thread all of his own, so I'll stop it here.

Most websites these days use Unicode encoding. (I think that includes this one.) But if you copy data from a different website, or a different program, it might be using a different encoding. It is tricky! The phenomenon is called Mojibake.

The problem was only in #310. For me, Window machine using Firefox, the è looks like an 'e' without any accent followed by a second character representing the accent. Similar for the à. All your other messages that I've seen look correct, though. Just that one case.
