Laina SpareTime | 96 comments Well, let's try this group! Bet you all an internet dollar nobody will have heard of the book I'm looking for!

It was published in probably the very late 80s, more likely sometime in the mid-90s. I would have read it sometime in the early 2000s. I *think* it's YA, but it could be MG, too. The girl who is the main character begins to have memory lapses, like finding her shoes covered in mud and not remembering leaving, or baby-sitting, and coming to find the parents yelling at her for the baby crying.

I believe the reason for the memory lapse turns out to be a ghost possessing the girl, who died at the same age. I think there was something about how similiar they looked, and the cover may have had them both on it? But I'm shaky on that.

Anyone have any ideas?

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Laina, do you remember if the girl has any flashbacks to the ghost's past?

I found a few books were a girl is possessed by a ghost and has memories that belong to the ghost's past.

Maybe? Try me, I've been looking for years, I can look through a few books!

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments These don't quite fit your description. But, there may be something that triggers a memory about your book.

The Dark Garden The Dark Garden by Margaret Buffie
The Night I Disappeared The Night I Disappeared by Julie Reece Deaver

Do you remember if the book was more mysterious, scary, fantasy, etc?

How far along in the book is the ghost possession discovered? Does the reader know at the beginning that the story is about a girl possessed by a spirit?

Laina SpareTime | 96 comments I actually own the Dark Garden. Totally not it. The other one doesn't seem right at all.

I think it was more mysterious, but it's been a long time. I don't think the reader knows at the beginning, no.

Holly (hollylovesbooks) | 759 comments By the way, do you happen to remember what time period the ghost girl is from? And is it set in the US, UK or somewhere else?

message 8: by Laina (new) - added it

Laina SpareTime | 96 comments ...well, you managed to find another book I read when I was a kid and forgot the title of. Congrats on that!! XD

I'm still looking through the lists. I don't remember what time period the ghost girl was from, no, and it's kind of hard to say. The Canadian thing means sometimes I read a lot of UK books as a kid. Sorry, that's not helpful at all!

Laina SpareTime | 96 comments Okay, I looked through all three of the lists and nada.

I'm so fun :P

Laina--I too have the problem of having read a lot ot UK titles as a kid. But in my case, it's because my Dad was military, and when we were in a non-English primary language country most of the schools were set up for the dependents of the UK politico/military/industrial machine. As a result, many of the teachers were from the UK as were many of the text books and library books. Sometimes means that I wait a long time to find titles of my forgotten books. And, having said that--just bump the thread up every 30 to 90 days once the first flurry dies down, if it isn't ID'ed right away.

Laina SpareTime | 96 comments Thanks!! I also read a lot of rather old (compared to my actual childhood dates) book because the school I went to had a very small and very dated library.

Ah, don't worry. I'm the one who made the lists :'D we can be fun together.

Laina SpareTime | 96 comments I mean, I found about six thousand books I wanted to read, added a couple books to one of the lists, and found a DIFFERENT book that I was thinking of for years... but not this one :P

Laina SpareTime | 96 comments Believe it or not, this post was a few years after one on another message board. My first post looking for this was in April.

Of 2010.

Looks like our "coldest case" is 7.5 years old. Glad you didn't have to wait that long. :)

Ha, no, I'm glad to have gotten it, too. It's pretty awesome. I was beginning to think I'd made it up, but the google books description has things where I'm just like "I SAID THAT!!!!" like the baby-sitting thing.

The cover even has them both on it! *grins*

Congrats! It's a good feeling. How did you find out the title of your book?

message 28: by Laina (new) - added it

Laina SpareTime | 96 comments I had this posted on Name that Book over on LibraryThing back in 2010 and then a couple newer posts in like 2012/2013 and someone finally recognized it. They even posted on my wall over there so I'd be sure to see the reply.
