The Series Challenge Scoring/Rules - Simple Version

I followed a modified version of 2014's rules. However, I enjoyed my personal challenge and the ability to keep track in a group setting immensely! May I keep a personal thread again this year, and like MrsJ, continue on from last year's list?
My basic challenge was, I had to have more finished series (from the time of the start date) than new and incomplete series. So, if I had completed 12 series, but had only 10 new and unfinished series on the go, I was golden!

What do I need to do to join the challenge?

You'd just need to set up a thread in this folder and set your goal!

Given that I am really hoping to just find a way to hold to my goal to finish some series before starting new, I was thinking that instead of the points system, just focus on guidelines for finishing series with these rules:
1. Earn one credit for finishing a series
2. Earn one credit for every five books that are neither the first or most recent in a series
3. Group reads are exempt
4. Spend one credit each time I read the first book of a new series.
5. Goal would be to end the year with credits
If this does not fit, that is okay. My feelings won't be hurt. I can just track it on my own. Either way, this thread has given me the inspiration. :)

You can set your own rules.
I chose to base mine off of last years.
Becky chose to simplify as much as possible.
HiMS turned it into a D&D inspired game.
The sky's the limit. Set your challenge any way you would like this year!! Good luck and Have fun!! :)

So now I basically set a goal of 24 books for the year. That's two per month. I do not count first books in a series, nor re-reads. I do count short stories and graphic novels, but at the rate of 10 read to equal one book.
And that's it.
I tossed out the reward system because I already don't buy many books throughout the year and I'm in a book club by mail where they send me a book a month regardless.
I am considering a full Audible membership, but we'll see.

I actually started it a couple of weeks ago, but only finished it today. Do I count it as a January read or a February read? Do we record by start date or end date?
Thank you. :)

That's what I ended up doing. It's a bit more challenging that way, especially when you miss the month by a day or two.
Thanks, Chris! :)

I know I can’t use them towards purchasing new books:
1. I have neither had the time nor the finances for purchasing a lot of new books.
2. If there is a book I really want I’m going to end up buying it anyway.
3. I have tons of series that I either purchased the first book but have not read, or started and not finished. In fact, that is why I started the poll, Already Planning 2018, in that other group asking which series I should read first.
So, if any of you have any suggestions as to how I can revitalize my challenge and put the points I earn to some good use, I would greatly appreciate it!
Thank you 😊

Woooo. I wish I had some suggestions.
Let's see if Chris has some. I'm such a slumper right now.

Thanks for the support. I hope you get your reading mojo back soon. (((Hugs)))
I'll keep my fingers crossed that Chris might have a suggestion or five. :)

I do keep it simple. I've found that challenges that are too much work get old.

I understand what you're saying.
It's not the complexity that has me stuck, though.
Now that its all spelled out, the hardest part is writing out the post for each update. I can simplify that, however, by just listing the points earned for each book instead of going into detail about how or why.
I just don't know what to do with the points once I earn them.

There are a lot of series that we start...and then are "reading" forever because the series never ends. Maybe, use the points to pay out of trying to finish up a series?
But you have to deduct more points if you start a new series.

To make sure I understand your suggestion...
Instead of buying in "18. A New Series Credit can be purchased for 500 points" I have a buyout? Or do both - "19. A series can be dropped/abandoned for the cost of 500"?
Plus, change "6(a). Begin a New Series before completing the Monthly Goal = -10 points." to -20?
So does buying my way out mean I can start a new series without the -20 penalty?

Yes! Exactly that.
Except you'd still have to pay the New Series penalty, too.

Would you (and Chris) mind taking a look when you get a minute? Please?
I just to make sure it makes sense.
I'd spelling everything out in case anyone else wants to borrow this version of the challenge.
The main changes were rules #6 (a & b), and #19.
Nyssa's agonizingly over thought version of the series challenge.

Besides, I've been doing it since Jan 1st ;)

In the meantime, this establishes a folder so people can get their list threads started early.
