Evelyn | 1410 comments My personal challenge for 2015 is very simple. Since I am a sucker for a used book sale, I have shelves and shelves of books I have purchased very inexpensively and have just never gotten around to reading. I would like to average three a month in 2015 for a total of 36. This leaves some room for books of the month and maybe a readalong or two.

I will fill in the titles at the end of Dec, as I hope to make some progress between now and then.

Edit: not making much progress so it is safe to say these will still be on my shelf come January

message 4: by Pink (new)

Pink This should be my challenge!

message 5: by Garyfalia (new)

Garyfalia I should do the same. Good luck !!

dely | 5214 comments Lol, funny title and useful challenge! Good luck ;)

message 7: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Think how happy you will be afterwards! Have you dared to count your unread books. I was similarly afflicted, UNTIL I forced myself to read them all before I allowed myself to buy another book. I was also running out of bookshelf space. I didn't make myself read books given to me as presents.

Good luck.

message 8: by Gill (new)

Gill | 5719 comments I'm the same with Kindle books, Evelyn. So that's part of my challenge this year. At least they aren't filling up my bookshelves!

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

We are similar, Evelyn!

message 10: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn | 1410 comments Chrissie I counted them about 3 book sales ago, and there were 74. Can you all believe I bought 5 more today?!? I should be committed.....

message 11: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (cathiebp2) | 653 comments Too funny when I read your challenge! Great way to shave off your tbr list. Of course you'll be adding those 5...

Chrissie Evelyn wrote: "Chrissie I counted them about 3 book sales ago, and there were 74. Can you all believe I bought 5 more today?!? I should be committed....."

I had about 100 to get through. At the end I was so darn sick of of the chore that I promised my self to only buy books as fast as I could read them. Of course I left the worst ones to the end... The end was a horror. I couldn't figure out why I had bought some of them.

message 13: by Maureen (new)

Maureen (maureencean) I read a book on my shelf only about 1 every 5 times if I am lucky. And I don't count the books I buy for book club. I tell myself that ey are retirement presents to myself, LOL. Sad that I have a good ten years left to work! I miss the first two days of our big library book sale next weekend when I go to Parent's Weekend at college, but there is a used bookstore there. Only one though, book for me I mean!

message 14: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn | 1410 comments Retirement presents to yourself, I love that! Be strong on the one book limit Maureen! But if you buy 5, that's ok too lol

I am planning to read them in roughly the order I bought them in - starting on the first shelf and working my way along it. There is a wide variety, so I don't think I'll get bored.

message 15: by Maureen (new)

Maureen (maureencean) Well, I can only get one in Ithaca because I will buy as many as I like at the library sale, if there is anything good left!

message 16: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn | 1410 comments I always go to my library book sale on the last day, 2 bucks a box. And now it is clear why I am in the unread situation I am!

message 17: by Noel (new)

Noel (noel-brady) Haha, I like the name of your challenge :) I am in the same boat! I go weak in the knees for used bookshops!

Same here! Evelyn, I think you set a good goal - enough to make a dent but small enough to leave room for reading other stuff. Good luck!

message 19: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn | 1410 comments Thanks, crossing my fingers that I make progress as I am sure my bookcases are nearing critical mass.

message 20: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn | 1410 comments Looking at all the planned reads I have for December, I thought it was safe to insert the names of my books on my shelf to start with in Jan. Now that I have touched them all, I can't wait to get started!

message 21: by Angela M (new)

Angela M Evelyn , I love your challenge . I really need to consider this for 2015 given that I have around 50 titles on my kindle that I am working through . Yikes ! I did get a lot of them with gift cards and as kindle deals but really - I'm not too addicted -lol !!

message 22: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn | 1410 comments Thanks Angela, I really don't know when things got so out of control on my shelves.......I know how, just not when lol!

message 23: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ I am with Angela, I think I have more than fifty on my kindle and unread books on my real, shelves are over 200. I will never rad them all but I think I will, just can't get rid of them. Good luck with you challenge.

message 24: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn | 1410 comments Thank you Diane you just made me feel so much better! I have about 150 unread books on my real bookshelves, glad to be in your company : )

message 25: by Angela M (new)

Angela M I forgot to mention the 18 ARCs that I have from NetGalley on my kindle . I really do need to learn to get along with less sleep !

message 26: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn | 1410 comments Lol Angela, that's priceless!

message 27: by Angela M (new)

Angela M Thanks for inspiring me , Evelyn . I'm going to work on a list for 2015 .

Terry ~ Huntress of Erudition | 572 comments Hi Evelyn,
I have no more space on my shelves for anymore books, but I keep buying them anyway! It actually makes me happy to look at all the unread books and imagine reading one after another. I have them sorted (kind of) according to genre.
Yet, I am a sucker for a new release from an author I love or a suggestion from a Goodreads friend regarding a book I never heard of, but sounds intriguing.
Almost every time I buy a book, I say to myself, "OK, this is the last one I will buy until I finish enough books I already own, to clear some space on these shelves."
And don't get me started on Kindle - my sister and I share an account, so the number of books we have is at least partially her fault!

message 29: by Evelyn (last edited Dec 03, 2014 06:01AM) (new)

Evelyn | 1410 comments Good luck Angela! I'm sure we will both feel super-accomplished by the end of the year : )
Crossing fingers anyway

message 30: by Angela M (new)

Angela M It's great to be in such good company with all of you !

message 31: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn | 1410 comments Terry I understand completely, thank goodness I don't have an eReader or I know I would have even more unread books. My goal is to read enough books off my shelves so that what's left actually fits lined up in rows all pretty, not stacked haphazardly like they are now, before I buy anymore. I'm doing surprisingly well on the not buying anymore part, but instead of reading what I have, I keep taking more books out of the library......

Terry ~ Huntress of Erudition | 572 comments One more thing, Evelyn - you should read "Ruska" in January, if you live in a cold climate - it is one of my all time favorites, to get engrossed in on a long winter day, preferably sitting in a comfy chair by a fireplace.

Sorry for the double post, I will edit it when I get to a computer.

Terry ~ Huntress of Erudition | 572 comments Maybe the reason we acquire and read more books than we have space for, is a Collector's mentality - just loving to have them around so you can think of when you will read them and hating to part with any that might become your favorites...

message 34: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn | 1410 comments Thanks for the Russka tip Terri : )
Recently I read This Is Not the End of the Book and there were a line in it about the pleasure one can get from just walking into a room with a bookcase and looking at it, not even touching. I only just barely stopped myself from yelling "I know I know" as I was reading.

message 35: by Lee (new)

Lee Whitney (boobearcat) I agree Terri. Such a comfort to have books in my den. When I come home from stress at work I step in the den and relax.

Ha Ha Ha!!! Love it!

message 37: by Paulfozz (new)

Paulfozz | 1001 comments Good luck Evelyn, and thanks for the idea for my own challenge. I have the same problem with used books… just cannot resist. With new books you know you're probably going to find them easily in pretty much any shop but when you see an old out-of-print book you've not seen before then it's difficult to say no as you never really know if you'll find another copy.

message 38: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn | 1410 comments I think the reason I have such a weakness for used books is that they have been cast away and I feel so sorry for them, I just want to bring as many home as I can and love them. Thank goodness I am allergic to cats.......

message 39: by Greg (new)

Greg | 8315 comments Mod
I do that kind of anthropomorphizing too Evelyn. I feel that way especially about books that haven't been properly appreciated.

Unfortunately I do love cats, and despite my allergy, I've owned at least one from the moment I had my own place. My partner sets the limit at two though; so that keeps me under control. :)

I continually tease him about the "perfect" rescue cat (a super-sweet Siamese) that we saw at an animal adoption drive, the one he said we couldn't violate the two cat rule for. I tease him that I'm willing to trade the more troublesome one of ours (Doyle) for the Siamese, and that when he comes back from a trip one day Doyle might look a little different and answer to another name. Truthfully though, I wouldn't give Doyle up even though he's the naughtiest animal I've ever owned.

Beth | 508 comments Bridges of Madison County is great - read that one, for sure!

message 41: by Angela M (new)

Angela M Beth , I loved that one too . The movie was great too .

Beth | 508 comments Angela wrote: "Beth , I loved that one too . The movie was great too ."

I know, right? I've watched that movie so many times and it always makes me cry!

message 43: by Angela M (new)

Angela M Me too .

message 44: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn | 1410 comments Greg, that's really funny about poor Doyle : )

Beth and Angela, I loved the movie too, but haven't read the book yet - but I definitely will get to it!

message 45: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn | 1410 comments Finished my first challenge book today, The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous. Was looking for an easy fluff read before the final push to complete Ulysses. Got it, but also ended up learning quite a bit about both the music world and the horse racing world, bonus.

message 46: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn | 1410 comments Daughter of Fortune, 4 stars. Liked the setting and the time frame, Chile and San Francisco, gold rush, mid 1800's. Interesting story, courageous characters.

Leslie | 16369 comments Evelyn wrote: "Daughter of Fortune, 4 stars. Liked the setting and the time frame, Chile and San Francisco, gold rush, mid 1800's. Interesting story, courageous characters."

Sounds intriguing. It might make a good companion book to what I am currently reading, The Luminaries.

message 48: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn | 1410 comments Ah yes, I read The Luminaries last year. This was an easier read, but very similar in the type of characters and the challenges they faced in that time and place - towns that sprung up near gold strikes. You are right, I hadn't made the connection myself!

message 49: by Erica (new)

Erica | 944 comments I've also had Daughter of Fortune on my bookshelf for years...maybe I'll read it soon since you've given it 4*

message 50: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn | 1410 comments I hope you like it too Erica!
