And then to find out he's been kidnapped and put into an institute with other kids, and they've all got either telekinetic or telepathic abilities? Oh, this is gonna be sooo good.

32% - (view spoiler)[Oh the Institute and the people 'running' it are awful. The tests and the treatment of the kids. Urgh. I felt sick reading the chapter where Luke is getting his eye test and one of the women keeps slapping him, AFTER HE'S HAD A SEIZURE! And when Luke thinks 'oh she doesn't see us as real children, we're just subjects so they can rationalise how they treat us then go home to their 'real children' and it was horrible. My heart is really hurting for these kids.

Also, I feel like Stephen King was like oh so Stranger Things was inspired by my work, so I'm gonna be inspired by that and it feels a little like that and the MKUltra stuff for sure! (hide spoiler)]

Finished - (view spoiler)[I have to admit, after all the action and gunfire and death, the ending was a little underwhelming. I expected catastrophic results after the kids took over the institutes, but it's left open-ended. I also wanted to know what happened to Stackhouse. Was he killed by the lisping man? Or did he escape? Why didn't Luke and Tim kill him?

I think we can all agree the true hero in this book is Avery. Rest in peace, little buddy :(

22% - shots for dots. My first thought is that what’s going on doesn’t seem so bad, which immediately makes me suspicious there’s a lot we’re not being told and it’s probably terrifying.

37% - Maureen and Avery. Some unpleasant details of some of the tests being undertaken. Luke is certainly going to need to use everything he has to find out anything.

50% - Escape. Though you suspect it has to go that way, it’s still a pretty gutsy move from Luke. Do wonder how this will develop.
