Thaddeusly | 10 comments In 7th grade my teacher read a book to the class about a girl who was really interested in da Vinci's work. I think she might've been an artist? I think this might've been the first place I heard about his helicopter design, but I'm not 100% sure. I read about him a little bit after this book was read to us and sometimes I accidentally blur things together.

I'm mostly certain she had a dad, but not very certain she had a mom, and I think she lived on an island. I know there was a beach nearby because I kind of remember that there was a scene involving a crab. I'm pretty sure a hurricane or a tropical storm hit because the teacher read it to us in the September following Hurricane Katrina and told us that she had planned reading it in the spring before it had hit.

I'm pretty sure the story describes the process of them trying to make their house a little bit safer? Or going to a school, maybe? I think it might've been a smaller community...

So the book was read to the class in 2005, for those searching.

Thaddeusly | 10 comments *Shakes head* It definitely wasn't Nim's Island. I'm pretty sure the island was... Well, populated.

Part of preparing for the hurricane might've involved hammering boards over windows...

Thaddeusly | 10 comments A friend provided an important detail! The girl's name was Agnes. Using this, I could find out that the book was No Place Like Periwinkle by Merrie Koester. It looks like it's part of a series of science education books, which I don't think I had known before.

I'm a little confused about the dates because they don't work out, but it's likely that I'm miss remembering something as the book is definitely the right one.
