My husband remembers reading a book in the late 70's or early 80's in middle school in Illinois. The book was similar to Where the Red Fern Grows. It takes place in the country. The main thing he remembers is that there are 2 dogs in the book named Grits and Gravy. He does not remember the title, and has asked MANY librarians over the years if it sounds familiar, to no avail. Thanks for your help!

Googling "dogs" "grits and gravy" there was a result from Google Books. I have no idea if this is the right one but the copyright is 1960 so it could be! The boy's dogs are named Grits and Gravy.I can't find the link on Goodreads but the book is called "Pride of Possession" by James Street. He can read a preview here:
