Vy Pham Yeah try in my opinion I think hazel should die I don't really think that she should live

Paula I hate to say it but it made sense that she should have died before Augustus. She was sicker and he was in remission. I was very sad when he died and how he died.

Grace yah, true. And i think he deserved to live!!!

Maddie I think they both deserved to live. But since Hazel was writing the story, it made since that she would not die. However, a good character must die, so I think that Augustus had to die (kind of). Like in If I Stay (SPOILER) Teddy dies and in The Hunger Games (SPOILER) Rue and Prim both die. Great characters must die in order for a feeling and strong passionate love for the book in my opinion.

Ehlgee Hahaha kind of. I feel that way Missy Maddie. Though, I would rather like for Augustus to die really, and not Hazel. WEll in short, for my opinion, someone has to die for a good movie to come. But I really like the plot goes on. It's like, as they say, the whole book is a poem.

Grace thats true.....but stilll

Emily yah I kind of would of. sorry Hazel! but if I were to write this book I would of had them both die. But I really feel that John Green really pulled off Gus dyeing.

Storm Arashi As I didn't like either character if they died in each others arms would've been a better ending.

first thing i thought hazel would die.

Trinity Smith I liked how the story ends and I wouldn't change a thing. Neither of them deserved to die but one of the did. Gus died to end the story with Hazel finding out what happend in the book.

Ahmed I liked this book and thought Isaac should die instead of Agustus.

Trinity Smith I didn't Isaac didn't have cancer after he went blind.

Laura We wouldn't know how Augustus would react to Haze's death, perhaps the end would be more heartbreaking with Hazel dying witnessing Augustus trying to live with the pain of her gone. Augustus has an unconditional love for Hazel, how could/would he move on?

Channah Doesn't Hazel die a year after the book ends anyway? I was perfectly happy with Augustus's death- I wasn't crying or anything, but it was a fine plot point. It wouldn't have worked as well if Hazel died, especially since it's written in first person.

Trinity Smith Hazel doesn't die

Grace we know that!!! but what would u prefer

Trinity Smith I am answering Fake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I like that Hazel gets to live!!!!!!!!!!!

Theodorus B. Honestly if Augustus hadn't died, I might have left the book a little happier. It was so predictable that he was going to die. It would have been great if they did all the stuff leading up to Gus dying and then BAM! Hazel dies instead! That would have been much better. No one would have expected that... Also...how great would it have been if the narrator, Hazel, like in 'an imperial affliction' had died, unable to finish the story... parallels... yes.

I'm not just saying this because I love Augustus Waters, because actually I don't really care for him at all.

I was kind of hoping that it would end the same way, mid sentence...

Theodorus B. Maria wrote: "Brittany wrote: "Honestly if Augustus hadn't died, I might have left the book a little happier. It was so predictable that he was going to die. It would have been great if they did all the stuff le..."

That would have been interesting, heartbreaking, and less cliche than the end of the book.

Trinity Smith I expected Hazel to die not Gus. What you are telling me now is that when you first met Gus you knew he was going to die. Did you know that his cancer came back in the begining of the book. No! His death was unexpected until you found out his cancer came back.

Maddie As Trinity commented above, I thought Hazel would die. However, someone spoiled Augustus' death for me.

Trinity Smith When most people started to read the book they thought Hazel was going to die. But it was Gus. It wasn't expected that he was going to die in the begining of the book. So it is not a cliche ending.

Trinity Smith The end of the story is perfect just the way it is.

Gordon Paisley Extremely bad form in the spoiler in your post title. Some people may not have read the book yet. (you can tell who they are--they are the happy people).

you are absolutely right!!

Trinity Smith I agree.

Theodorus B. It was expected that Hazel would die, that's how I knew Gus would die. It was obvious to me.

Grace i really liked Gus, it was obvious it was going to end that way.
my heart broke for him

Elizabeth It's not about whether either Hazel or Augustus "deserves" to live. Everyone deserves to live simply because they are human, but everyone dies eventually anyway. It just so happened that Augustus died at a younger age than most people.
But I think it is necessary in a sense that Augustus dies because the story is about Hazel and her life which happens to involve cancer. Gus' remission and death helped Hazel to understand how her parents would feel about her own death among other things. And I know this may sound cruel or cliché but it was part of her journey and how her character developed. Augustus' death is essential to the book.
