I hate the Ducks and I hate the Beavers.

Seems strange, but I actually prefer the Ducks. College football is the only place where I could possibly choose a bird over beaver.
Heh. Beaver...that'll always make me laugh. Here in MD, I'm constantly being told to FEAR THE TURTLE. Shut up U of Marylanders. You have the stupidest mascot.
A team Montambo could cheer for... The University of California-Santa Cruz Banana Slugs.

Sorry to revel in your discomfort there Montambo, but bwahahahaha! Not to worry, Oregon sucks for football so your pain should be short-lived. Banana Slugs....frikkin' Christ, perfect for Santa Cruz Kool-Aid swillers. Yellow, soft, slimey and completely lacking a backbone. And,not particuarly tasty. Yes, I've actually had banana slug icecream. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Right, slugs. It feels like a slug infestation over here at the moment. The other night I stepped bare feet on one. It really freaked me out. It's not everyday that you step onto something this meaty and covered in gunk.
Same last week: I reach out where there supposed to be a branch and instead of the rough peach tree bark I get this wet, gooey flesh. Damn slugs, why would they even need to climb trees? And where is Bunny, the slug killer when you need her? I don't think I can take yet another close-slug-encounter!!!
Gretchen... our local "free spirit" community on the Russian River used to host the Banana Slug Festival. http://www.nytimes.com/1989/03/22/us/...
You know what? If we had a local sports team that featured mollusca on all jerseys, pennants, christmas stockings, bumper stickers and baby diapers, I'd dump them for a different phylum of animals to love.
I wanna see a 10 inch slug! I'm going to CA in October. Will I see them or do they only come out at a certain time of year?
Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Gretchen....Healdsburg is SONOMA COUNTY!! Arrrrrrrrrrrrrgh! But, you have the sweet, sweet knowledge that you won't have to deal with the mind numbed idjit touristas that infect Napa Co. That is, unless, you plan to visit there. I would highly recommend against it. AS for establishment of your base of operations, you have chosen most wisely. Healsdsburg is awesome and right in the middle of what I think the true heart of Sonoma County. Such a cool town. Also, ignore Santa Rosa altogether. I know... I live there. If you've got any particular interests, post em. From restaurants, wineries, divebars, art, local fun (see above post on Banana Slug fest), lemme know and I'll provide some tips. Glad to hear you're coming to town. FYI, lots of highway construction in the Santa Rosa, Windsor corridor. Ongoing for 2 years now.
Oh, and quite doubtful you'll see a banana slug at this time of year. Too hot. Of course, you might find one of the 10 inch robotic slugs at the Sensuality Shoppe in Sebastopol.
Oh really? Well, I think the point of our trip was to visit Napa so maybe we're staying in the wrong spot? No, actually the point is to drink wine I think so Sonoma sounds right. I'm obviously 100% clueless about the area. I'm just going because it's an excuse to get away for a long weekend and I've never been to California. Yes PLEASE provide some tips!! We want to go to wineries. I would like to go to some small ones because I HATE CROWDS. I want to go to some cute shops and I want to go to dinner. That's about it. We're only there for a weekend so mostly I plan on sleeping a lot, sitting outside, staring into space, sitting still, not making anyone breakfast/lunch/dinner/snacks, and other such blissful pastimes. If the girls I'm going with decide to get too active I'm going to ditch them. :)(I think our house is about 5-6 miles west of the town of Healdsburg.)
Cool Gretchen, then yes you'll be staying close to home - not sure where you're staying but that's OK. Heeldsburg is small, and has got all yer looking for. Additional questions: wine/food preferences? As for shopping, head to downtown Healdsburg Square. You'll find lots of parking behind the main hotel there. Everything is in very short walking distance. Saturday mornings can find the parking limited due to a great farmer's market that's hosted in the lot...and I got to apologize for blowin' a gasket there. Napa and Sonoma are forever locked in mortal combat over who reigns supreme, viticulturally speaking.
No apologies needed. I'm only 30 miles from the state line but if someone confused me for a Marylander I'd be pissed off. I get it. So do you know of a restaurant that does local foods? Or maybe a French restaurant. I think the chicks I'm going with want to go someplace nice at least one night. But I would love to know of a great dive bar, myself. Thanks!!
Heyas...late response is regrettable. I've been involved in a move of residence. Enough about me. There are some very good restaurants along the lins of which you speak. The locals have kept them in business for a long time now. Also...a local winery which is a favorite of mine. It has been owned and operated by the same family since the late 1800s...and they are outstanding. I want to revisit my notes and follow this post with my reccomendations. Then you can pick and choose as y'all feel free to. Definitely ask the locals what they like. They'll be sure to offer their opinions, heh.

I HATE BEAVERS VS. DUCKS TALK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And the attire just kills me.
Civil War? Who cares??!! I hate college football season.
