Howey, Hugh; Shift (Silo #2); Informal Buddy Read; Start Date 28 November 2014
I didn't realize it was a prequel either; I assumed it would be a continuation. I agree, it should be interesting. Looking forward to it!

I have a K! :)
I'll be gone when this starts, so I'm posting a little early on the first section.I've read the First Shift portion, which is through Chapter 23 (view spoiler)
Enjoying it!!!!
I have my Audible version all prepped and ready to go on my phone. I don't know if I'll have much time to get into it on Friday, but I should get started on Saturday, so I might be a day late. I'm looking forward to reading about how the people all ended up living in the silos.
I am trying to finish up another book before I focus on this book. May be day late but luckily there is a holiday so I can catch up. Hopefully if it's good as Wool it should be fast read. Looking forward to learning why they ended up in the silos and why the secrecy.
Aaaack. I am trying to finish up other books so I am ready to go for this one. I also still have another book to read before this BR. Take a deep breath, I still have a few days right?
Yep Kimberly!
I started tonight and I've read the first 8 chapters. I have the overdrive ebook and audio
I'm finding it quite interesting so far, the idea of finding out how the Silos came to be is pretty cool and I like the alternating POVs and timelines. It has been a while since I read Wool so none of the names of the characters are familiar to me yet, but maybe others that read Wool recently will pick up on some

I've just started. I'm only in Chapter 3. Also doing the audio. I just finished The Likeness, which was spectacular, and I'm struggling to get accustomed to the pace of Shift. I'm hoping it'll pick up soon.
I reread Wool just a couple of weeks ago. I don't recognize any of the names. I think it's set in a much earlier time period than Wool, and the history of the silos was so secretive.
I was thinking that it was set much earlier than Wool, hundreds of years maybe. I just barely started. I'm listening to the audio too and hoping for the pace to pick up. It started out a little political, which doesn't hold much interest for me. I'm hoping it becomes more personal soon.
I stopped and started a couple of times before finally getting far enough in to get interested. It starts out so much slower than Wool, and the story is different too. I do like it, but it was hard not to expect a repeat of Wool. Once I got over that, I was fine and I've been enjoying it.
I just finished chapter 10 and I think you are right Kristie, that this may be set hundreds of years before Wool. I just went back and checked the Wool BOM thread and they were in silos 17 and 18 in case anyone was wondering the same thing :)
I'm not sure if I missed it on audio, has it been clear why Donald was asked to design the Silos? They mentioned burying the world's nuclear waste, but I'm not sure if there was more stated

Donald designed the towers in college, so they were using his original design, but changed to go underground. I'm not as far as you, but I feel like the nuclear waste issue was just an excuse and they know more than they're telling him.
I agree about Wool. It started out so grippingly. I too am happy to hear this one just starts off slow. :)
I started last night too. It is quite political. I am fascinated to find out how it all started though. It is flicking between the time when the silos were built and many years later (I think about 100). All long before Wool was set.
Finished the First Shift
This is certainly slower than Wool, but I think it is really interesting and building up to give a good picture of the world.
(view spoiler)
I am enjoying it and keen to learn more about the second shift...
Btw, the audio narrator is very good. He really brings a lot of tension to the scenes

Just finished Chapter 18The timelines are 2110 living in the Silo and 2052 building the Silo.
@ Karen
(view spoiler)
Only first few chapters in, I do think there is an agenda for building these silos that I think the senator may already be aware of but he is just feeding Daniel some hog wash. So Daniel is the engineer, interesting. And then we go forward about 60 years - still not clear what is going on here, but maybe it is the first testing of the Silo?
@ Karen - I didn't read it until after I wrote mine, then I just peeked a little bit to see if you had picked up what I had.
Renee - it would mean Troy was in his 90s - I am not picturing him that old, because the book did say Danielle was in his thirties.
Troy/Daniel isn't much older now than he was when they originally entered the silo in 2052(?). A full shift is only 6 months, and I believe they don't age while in cryo. I'm trying to read full chapters before I set the book down. If I stop in the middle, I have to flip back and check the date to help me keep the right context.
I'm on chapter 60 or 61, and I'm wondering now if (view spoiler)
I'm only 11% in. And I have the same impression as Cynthia. They do a 6 month shift, during which they age. Then, they go into a cryogenic sleep, where they don't age. So, during their planned 10 shifts over a hundred year time period, they would only age about 5 years. I'm not sure if I haven't gotten to the Troy = Daniel part yet or if I missed something. Guess I'd better just keep reading.
I'm still in the early stages of Shift. It definitely is slower than Wool and is more of a prequel. Still trying to figure the connection between 2045 and 2110( time of silo). But I'm still enjoying it. Like everyone, I definitely don't trust Senator Thurmann.
And the time period is definitely less refined than in Wool, in terms of the food. Even though the use of cryogenics is key for now. Wonder when the women were awoken and when did things start to change?
I'm just starting Ch 22. I for one am glad about the 'name change' as it helps me to keep track of the time period we are in. With all the flipping back and forth, I'm afraid I'd lose the plot line otherwise.
The pace has definitely picked up - but it's still no comparison to Wool, with a death around every corner.
(I should stop comparing, I know...)
I love the title of this book - it's so clever. The work shifts, the shift to another system/way of life, the other casual references, e.g., 'shift in the weather'...
I'm a little confused with some of the above comments...Who is Daniel? Does that mean that different regions of the book have Donald's name as Daniel?
From what I can gather Troy is Daniel in certain parts of the book. Maybe different time periods? I don't really know because I haven't gotten to that part yet.
Think Cynthia meant Donald. The rest of the newcomers haven't gotten that far. And I see that the Silo One is run completely differently to the rest. It's really hard not to use your old info from Wool. I seem to have put on blinkers based on past experiences. But we kinda do that in life, ingrained behaviour. Makes me wonder if Hugh Howey planned this or is this my viewpoint based on my experiences.
Cynthia, Sarah and Kristie are referring to Daniel, but there is no Daniel in my book (I did a search on the ebook too!) which is why I'm wondering if my Donald is their Daniel (kind of like "where's Wally" is "where's Waldo" in the U.S)
Wait....so (view spoiler) Either I really missed something or I just haven't gotten to that part. Though, I suppose it could make some sense, if that's the case...Here are the quotes confusing me:
Cynthia wrote, "Troy/Daniel isn't much older now than he was when they originally entered the silo in 2052"
Sarah wrote, " it would mean Troy was in his 90s - I am not picturing him that old, because the book did say Danielle was in his thirties"
I guess I'm not interpreting these right somehow.
Karen wrote: "Cynthia, Sarah and Kristie are referring to Daniel, but there is no Daniel in my book (I did a search on the ebook too!) which is why I'm wondering if my Donald is their Daniel (kind of like "where..."No....I was questioning who Daniel was. I don't have a Daniel in my book either. I thought maybe I just hadn't gotten far enough.
I have to admit, this thread is quite confusing right now. Can we just clear up the Troy / Donald / Daniel issue?? How many characters are we talking about? Does any one character go by more than one name?
