Haha, late to the party. You will have to excuse me - I am very bad with names so sorry for the confusion I caused which seems to have been long resolved. Daniel spells Donald in my mind, but apparently is not the name the book is using

So just finished Shift 1. I need to sleep for the night and in 10 hours Overdrive will be sucking the book back into cyberspaceville until I get my renewal back. The same thing happened to me with Wool. I'll see how far I get tonight.

The whole "Egress" thing makes me think of The City of Ember.

Wow. Crazy start. I think I like the earlier timeframe better right now but I'm getting into the later one. I think it's nuts that they tried to construct them without people knowing the whole design. That seems like such a crippled way to try to construct things. I do see the trauma pills that erase painful memories as being the source of how they wiped the older knowledge out.

I'm a bit confused as to why the women and children in silo 1 are just sleeping forever. They must anticipate being able to leave at some point. Though then all the men are like 10 years older from their shifts. I wonder if they chose men because women are probably more empathetic in general so they might not be able to rule the Silo's with an iron fist. Otherwise it was probably just sexism by the male congressmen.

I agree with most people on Anna, she just needed to let go from day 1. How many hints do you need? But what Donald did though......

Overall, not as exciting as Wool in terms of action. There were some dull moments. And now I am left with more questions and curious about what happens next. If we end up doing a BR of Dust in 2015, I'm game.

Sheesh. I guess the only way they could keep everyone down there is if they had nothing to go back to. Though you think it'd be better to keep the loved one with them. I kind of suspect that the people in charge let themselves be put to sleep the whole time while the worker bee's kept everything running. Though it seems bad to detonate a nuclear bomb within viewing distance of everyone you want to save. You'd think that would have some repercussions on the body but I suppose the nano's can fix all that.

I'm surprised they killed Troy. I suppose it's possible they didn't but you'd think they'd just make him forget again then wake him up again in 50 years or so. Otherwise people will start having to take shifts more often.

I like the way the end of this book connected to Wool. It was interesting to see it from another perspective. There was a section (as others have noted) that was a bit repetitive and slow, but overall I thought it was a really good book.

I liked that part of the ending too, it sets up really well to be ready to move onto the next book, for me it brought back some of the momentum that was lost in the middle.

I feel the same way, Kristie. I was initially annoyed that it was a prequel, but it worked out perfectly.

It was slower than Wool, but I think I didn't find it too slow because I read it intermixed with other books.

I like how he doesn't switch back and forth too often so you have a chance to gain some traction in each story. I just had to re-look up what the Silo number in Wool was so I wish they had given a bit more of a hint of that for people who had a bit between reading the two books.

It doesn't seem like they planned terribly well for staying down there 500 years. Plus all the people in the first silo still have the little bugs in them, so the trigger must be gone now? I wonder why they didn't die when it went off. Hmmm.

Craziness, they can reset whole silo's of memory. It seems to be getting worse though even with new generations of people. So I wonder if it's always just one person who ends up starting it or if more and more people do since the incidents get worse. It's crazy that they can do that stuff remotely, or mostly remotely.

It's interesting that Thurman could go out without a suit on. It makes me think that maybe the nano's in the air attack whatever they're infecting the other people with in the other silo's. So maybe if they can turn that off then they can get out. Though why they need to keep people in longer than necessary I'm unsure of.

I wonder if we'll see Donny again, since he can remember and obviously knows too much now, I'm not so sure. Maybe his sister will wake him up near the end.

Yay! We're back to the time during the first book.

I was wondering about the codes being entered into the door so I'm glad they explained it.

I'm thinking whoever was whispering to Donald when he went down during the last segment about him being a better leader is who swapped his name in the system. I like that they're explaining Jimmy. I think he's going to be important since he's the only one who hasn't been brainwashed but has learned all the history.

Oh Shadow :( I miss him even though we didn't see him much. I think the he was just right for not making Jimmy go nuts.

I was surprised how long the battles went on for. And that there weren't more cats since scavenging must not have been terribly hard with so many bodies.

I don't know how to feel about Donald. He seems to be going a bit nuts but he's in a rather terrible place. I can't imagine trying to make the decision of which of the Silo's gets to live. I don't really see them fighting each other but that's just me. Too much world and too few people.
