Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone question

I am wondering if anyone else has this issue. My laptop came with Windows 8 and I downloaded the Kindle app for it and all was great. Then I upgraded to Windows 8.1 which required updating the Kindle app. After the "upgrade" I could view my existing library but have not been able to download my purchases since. The app knows they are there and I own them but I can not open or download.

I installed the Kindle application for Windows 7 and earlier and can download my new purchases that way but it seems like a hack.
