Debbie | 2 comments Hello! I run a book blog, not on Goodreads, hadn't thought of it when I decided to make it, anyway I am looking for a Cinderella story. It is not the usual kind though, she tricks the glassmaker of the town into making her glass slipper, and devises her own way of getting to the ball. I don't remember it exactly. She has no Godmother, only her own cleverness. The ball goes well, and meeting the prince too I believe, but somehow she gets tricked or otherwise coerced out of being with him for a time, by her own family I think. Instead she (is forced to) travel(s) the country side listening to her legend grow. She chooses to fight for and take the prince back but then she either finds him dull or everything goes well, I don't quite know which. Before she sees the prince again I believe that she spends some time in a prison cell. So to recap, the biggest things I remember are the glass slipper bit, her traveling the country hearing her own story, the prison cell and, it was told from her own point of view, that was important. It was set in France I THINK, not sure. It most likely is a YA novel since that was mostly what I read at the time. I need it for my blog, I'm doing a segment on fleshed out Grimm's Fairy tales. But I can wait a while for this mystery to be solved, I'd rather not use "Cinder", which is my other choice even though it wouldn't fit in with the other books I've chosen, since it deviates to far from the original fairy tale. I'd prefer to find the right book, but I will accept suggestions along these lines though too. Thank you in advance!

It takes place after sees with the prince, but it shows some flashbacks of how she got to be there. She does do everything herself, she's very unhappy living as royalty, and she does spend time in prison.

Melanti | 330 comments I don't recognize the story, but here's Surlalune's listing of Cinderella retellings:

The whole site might be of interest to you though. It has the history and and a listing of retellings for most of the major fairy tales.

Wow, that was fast! It is "Just Ella"! At first I didn't recognize it because the cover had been updated but yep, that's it! Thanks so MUCH!
@ Melanti
I will definitely take a look at those other retellings, thank you! I dig the history of fairy tales a lot. It's the sort of thing I do.

Here, if either of you want to check out what you helped me with just click on the link below. It is finicky and typing it in doesn't work. it comes up as not published for some reason. If that doesn't work the one below it should lead you to the FB page for it.
