My latest narration is little gem that I hope will become a series. It has the flavor of Jean Shepherd's 'A Christmas Story', or 'Stand By Me', in that it deals with kids, as kids, not as a short adults.
The book is nostalgic and heartwarming. It deals with kids living in the Fennimore Cooper Acres Building Complex in Westchester NY in 1954, a few weeks before labor day and everyone goes back to school.
It's decided that play war from noon till when Mom calls everyone for dinner. The armies are decided by building number 1-6.
The protagonist, who wants to be one of the guys, is lousy at sports, but he has a real talent. He's a wide-eyed movie buff and has learned to to dramatic death scenes better than anyone. He wants to use that talent to get acceptance.
Although quite short, every word of this novella shows verisimilitude. There's not a fake line, idea, or plot twist. It's a very special work, and one that was difficult since there were so many different kid voices, but well worth it.
This is the first book of fiction by a guy named Bob Nick Shields who writes what he knows, and his memory of little details and touches adds a layer of richness I have yet to come across in my 14 audiobooks (5 of them worth hearing…maybe…)
