SOLVED Mice restarting society and following mans footsteps [s]

Was having a discussion with someone about the first book you remeber reading. This is going back probably 25-30 years. I read this on vacation as a kid. It was NOT age appropriate! lol

Humanity is gone for some reason and mice restart society (I believe in an area that is cut off) using everything we did as a template. But population boom suddenly has them starving so they begin looking for ways we controlled our population. They mistakenly think things like car crashes were intentional so they start making cars without brakes to speed things up.

The book gets even more far out from there. War, abortion, cannibalism etc. I believe each chapter was illustrated with pen and ink drawings.

This is a strange one. Was definitely not a children's book.
