Jace is having disturbing dreams where he’s harming Clary, which causes him to be distant and she misinterprets his behavior. Why wouldn’t he tell her or she ask him what’s wrong? Is this about being 17-years old or a plot device?

I feel like this is just how Clary and Jace work. They have never been real open with each other about things.

And it’s what drives me nuts about the series. So many of the plots center around their miscommunications, which I find tiresome.
